Faced with the sudden existential question, Luo Shu pondered deeply.
If the Chaos Insurgency's so-called "Awakening Protocol" was real—had it worked?
No.
If their goal was to reveal some grand "truth," Luo Shu still had no idea what that truth was.
If their aim was to make him trust Chaos—fat chance.
Learning about the Foundation's ruthlessness and SCP-2000 didn't suddenly make triggering XK-class scenarios acceptable.
That's like the pot calling the kettle black.
Chaos was the blackest pot of all.
The Foundation, for all its sins, had stopped an apocalypse.
Those millions of deaths? Chaos's fault, not the Foundation's.
Luo Shu had his own moral compass. He wouldn't abandon basic decency just because the Foundation had screwed him over.
Decision made, he turned back to IR1901—still cowering in the corner.
The man flinched, sensing Luo Shu's killing intent.
"Is death really that scary?"
Easy to say when you're not the one facing it.
IR1901 was just a low-level operative, clueless about Chaos's bigger plans.
Expendable.
Luo Shu's fingers twitched.
Kill him.
He deserved it. (Hundreds of thousands dead.)
He was dangerous. (Knew Site-19 inside out.)
He was useless. (Knew too little.)
But as Luo Shu reached for the Encyclopedia, IR1901 blurted:
"Don't kill me! I'll serve you! I'll leak Chaos intel! Just give the order!"
Luo Shu paused.
This guy's spine is made of wet noodles.
Trust him?
No. Too slippery.
Better to enslave him.
But as Luo Shu flipped to SCP-035's page, he noticed a new milestone:
[Milestone: Lord of Anomalies]
[Level: 1]
[Effect: SCP-126 has sworn loyalty to you.]
You can revoke its abilities at will.
You can temporarily borrow its powers (rendering it powerless during use).
Even better than enslavement.
Luo Shu patted IR1901's shoulder. "Good. Serve me well, and you'll live."
"Yes! Whatever you say!" IR1901 groveled.
With that settled, Luo Shu returned to SCP-049's unit.
The MTF squad still lurked outside, oblivious to the night's revelations.
Poor bastards.
Reborn from SCP-2000, shackled by fake memories.
Then again—weren't his own memories just as fabricated?
Maybe that's what Chaos wanted to "awaken" in me.
But what were they hoping for?
No matter. IR1901 would spill secrets eventually.
Back in SCP-049's unit, Luo Shu chatted idly with the Plague Doctor until 0500.
In the original timeline, SCP-096 should've arrived by now.
But it remained snoring in its cell.
The Site Director called an O5: "Why hasn't SCP-096 breached?"
The reply: "False alarm. Stay vigilant for SCP-035/049 interactions."
"Why keep them in the same site if they're so dangerous together?"
"Need-to-know basis, Director."
O5-level secrecy.
By 0900, the all-clear sounded.
Bearded Jack's voice crackled: "Luo Shu, wrap it up."
Yawning, Luo Shu rose from SCP-049's bed (yes, he'd slept there) and waved.
"Later, friend."
Why not?
SCP-049 was his "Anomalous Friend" now.
As for SCP-035?
IR1901 wouldn't dare release it again.
All's well.
