A month passed in the blink of an eye.
Akio walked along the road, occasionally receiving respectful glances from members of the Senju and Uzumaki clans.
"This feeling of trust... it's really the first time I've experienced something like this," Akio thought to himself.
Over the past month, there had been seven or eight battles against the Kaguya clan.
Due to the Kaguya Clan Head's wariness of barrier techniques, the Senju and Uzumaki allied forces were at a disadvantage. After all, just dealing with the Kaguya Clan Head required two Uzumaki elders along with numerous elite and peak-level jōnin to hold him back. This meant the alliance was consistently outmatched in terms of high-level combat power.
However, Akio had managed to firmly pin down the Kaguya Second Elder in every battle this past month, giving the allied forces a fighting chance.
Both the Senju and Kaguya clans were keeping an eye on the Uchiha, preventing them from sending reinforcements.
Despite the disadvantage, the allied forces remained patient. First, the Senju's Elder of the East would recover in about half a month. Second, Hashirama had been growing rapidly throughout the battles and was on the verge of breaking through to the level of a clan leader.
"No matter which of these happens first, the tide of battle will shift instantly!" Many among the allied forces were confident in this.
However, if the alliance members could see this situation clearly, the Kaguya Clan, after failing to break through for so long, had naturally taken notice as well.
Inside the Kaguya camp, Kaguya Jōrai was in discussion with the two clan elders and several peak-level jōnin.
"Damn it! We've already sent three requests for reinforcements to the Uchiha, and they still haven't responded?" The one speaking was the Kaguya Second Elder, who had been blocked by Akio for days. The frustration had long since built up within him.
"Reporting to the Second Elder, they keep stalling. They likely want us to wear down the enemy's forces first," a peak-level jōnin answered.
"Those damn Uchiha! One day, I swear..." Kaguya Jōrai growled in frustration.
"Send another letter," the Kaguya First Elder interrupted, his tone resigned.
"Hmph!" Kaguya Jōrai snorted but did not object.
The next day, the fourth plea for aid from the Kaguya reached Uchiha Tajima.
Summoning the peak-level jōnin of the clan, including Madara and Izuna, Tajima shook the letter in his hand and asked, "This is the Kaguya Clan's fourth request for reinforcements. Madara, what do you think?"
"Father, if they've sent four requests, it means their situation is truly dire. This is also the perfect opportunity to strike at the Senju. I recommend we act immediately!" Madara responded.
"Oh? Does anyone else have a different opinion?" Tajima asked again, shaking his head slightly.
The Uchiha's Grand Elder, Uchiha Shinji, stood up slowly and spoke, "Clan leader, when we attacked the Hyūga before, we paid a heavy price—an entire mine—just to get the Kaguya to hold off the Senju. If they want help now, shouldn't they offer something in return?"
Tajima shook his head again. "What benefits could we even gain? At most, we could take back the mine. But don't forget, right now, the only ones guarding the Kaguya homeland are the Third Elder and a handful of defenders!"
"Clan leader, you mean..." As soon as he said this, the hall fell into a buzz of chatter.
"That's right. We won't attack the Senju—we'll attack the Kaguya instead!" Tajima declared his final decision.
"Father, wouldn't that be dishonorable? The Kaguya are our allies," Madara hesitated, still a young man who cherished his ideals and his younger brother.
"Hmph, honor? Madara, remember this—during the Warring States period, only benefits matter, not honor!" Tajima said coldly. "After the Hyūga ambushed us last time, we lost nearly half our reserves. Right now, it may not seem significant, but in ten years, the Senju will surpass us completely! To prevent that, we need more resources. This is the perfect opportunity."
At the mention of the Hyūga ambush, Madara clenched his eyes shut in pain, remembering his fallen brothers. He said nothing more.
But even if he had protested, it would have been useless. The clan members in the hall were already growing excited.
"Since no one objects, go and gather the troops. We march tomorrow—to attack the Kaguya!" Tajima commanded, satisfied.
Meanwhile, the Kaguya messenger returned to the camp, rushing excitedly to the clan leader. "Clan leader! Good news! As soon as I delivered the message, the Uchiha leader gathered all his top warriors for a meeting. Half an hour later, I saw many Uchiha warriors packing up for battle."
"Damn Uchiha, they're finally joining the fight?" Kaguya Jōrai was overjoyed. "Pass my orders—let the clan rest well. Tomorrow, when the Uchiha arrive, we will crush the Senju and Uzumaki camps!"
At that moment, he never could have imagined that the Uchiha reinforcements he longed for would soon stab him in the back.
"Strange. Our last battle was three days ago, yet the Kaguya haven't attacked today. Are they giving up?" Akio mused inside the allied camp.
The others in the hall exchanged puzzled glances, unable to determine the reason.
However, their questions were soon answered.
"Reporting! The Uchiha Clan is making a move today!" A Senju scout delivered the message.
Once the scout left, the hall fell into silence.
Ten minutes later, the Elder of the East broke the quiet. "Although we expected this, the Uchiha's actual involvement puts us under even greater pressure... This will turn into a prolonged battle. I wonder how many of our kin we will lose."
"Our strength... still isn't enough," Akio thought to himself. "I promised the clan leader's nephew that I'd protect our people, yet all I've managed to do is hold off the Kaguya Second Elder. If I had defeated him, this war would have ended by now."
At the same time, similar thoughts ran through Hashirama's mind, though his emotions were even more conflicted.
"Madara... are we truly destined to meet on the battlefield? Have you forgotten our dream?" he thought.
"Big brother, stay strong!" Tobirama noticed Hashirama's doubt and encouraged him.
"There's no need to worry. By now, the Senju reinforcements should have received word. They will arrive tomorrow. Get some rest—there's going to be a fierce battle ahead!" The Elder of the East reassured them.
"Understood," Akio replied as he left the hall, followed by the others.
At that moment, none of them knew just how dramatic the events of the next day would be...
