Walking in the corridor was much more peaceful now that there were fewer students. However, I was concerned about the note that was in my pocket: "What if I regret going there?" On the way, I also ran into Edie, who was waiting for me.
Edie: " What took you so long? "
Me: "Something caught my eye. "
Edie: " Really, what was it? "
Me: " Nothing much, let's head to class before the teacher arrives. "
We left for the class and soon reached there. I grabbed the door handle to open it, but stopped when a question emerged in my mind.
Me: "Is Kevin in this class with us? "
Edie: "I guess so, why ask? "
Me: "I'm just worried"
Edie: " he's mostly busy on his phone during class, nothing will happen"
I opened the door and entered, but Edie was still outside. I asked him what had happened, but he didn't reply. He was looking somewhere as if trying to process something. I followed his gaze and saw Kevin sitting in the middle of the class.
Edie: "Why is he sitting in my seat? "
Me: "Why don't you ask him? "
Edie: " *whisper* ARE YOU KIDDING ME "
Me: "You can sit beside me at the back of the class instead. "
Edie: " I don't have any other choice"
We took our seats and unpacked our stuff; by that time, our teacher had also entered the classroom. We did our normal morning greetings and started studying. Edie, I was pretty fast when it came to doing the equations, but the others seemed like they were having trouble understanding.
A few minutes later, our class was interrupted when we heard the intercom shuttering, and then someone spoke from it - " I request Mr Woodwere and Ms Walker to come to the principal's office. "
Edie gave me a puzzled look. He didn't know about yesterday, but I knew why I was called in. I tried to stay calm because getting anxious wouldn't help, and then I left for the office.
The office was not very far from our class. It didn't take me long to get there. I knocked on the door and entered once I got permission from inside.
Luna was already there looking at her phone, texting someone, while the principal was sitting in his chair staring blankly - " Yes, sir? "- I asked; both of their ears stood up, and they turned their face towards me.
He requested that mIsit down so we could discuss the matter. I sat in the chair next to Luna; she put her phone in her pocket to listen to what the principal wanted to say.
Principal: "I've got a report regarding Kevin and you, Skyler. What happened in the cafeteria? Did he hurt you? "
Me: " No, he didn't do anything. He was just sitting beside me. It was I who caused the chaos. I couldn't just control my emotions lately.
I... I don't know the reason clearly what caused it, but maybe because I got to know he was a bully, and he was acting so nice and asking every time how I was doing. Anger started to build inside me cuz I thought he was playing some game with me, and I just snapped and lost my temper with him. "
Principal: "Uh.....you mean he was concerned about your comfort?" - I agreed - " Oh!..... that's something new I heard about him after many years. "
Me: " I have a question; why didn't you do anything about Kevn's behaviour? Maybe just transfer him to another school? "
Principal: " I will answer all your questions since you are here, but first, Ms Walker, you can go to your class. I'll talk to you later. "
Luna agreed and left the office. It was now just me and the Principal.
Principal: " Sky, you would have known till now that I'm Kevin's father right ? " - I agreed, "The thing I'm gonna tell you now, you need to keep it to yourself, don't tell anyone about. the thing is, Kevin was never like this before highschool, his behaviour and interests drastically changed after his....his mother died in an accident. "
We had the perfect family anyone would ask for; every night during dinner time, we used to tell each other about our day. Kevin was a little angel to us until one evening, everything changed;.I got a call from the hospital, and they told me that my wife had died in a car accident. The world started to crumble and fall around me; it was a shock for both of us. Since that day, I started keeping my distance from Kevin; each day, he would come from school more depressed, and I got calls from his teachers about his behaviour and falling grades. I thought it was because of his mother, but when he joined this high school, I got complaints about him bullying other students. That time, I realized that he was now a different person. I tried to talk to him, but it was too late. He completely ignored me and never gave me a chance. I don't know what to do to fix my mistake. I Failed As a Father. "
At that time, I had a mix of feelings flowing inside of me: Guilt, Sadness, Pity, and many others I couldn't describe. I know how it feels to lose someone you love and also someone you trusted so much, but regret why you did it. Now I regret getting angry at Kevin without knowing the full story about him. I asked his father if he had tried reaching his friends, and he said he had, but they also knew nothing about it.
Then the bell rang, and he told me I could go to my class because his job was done, and I needed to do the rest. I could not understand what he meant, but it was something related to Kevin. I exited the office to go to my previous class to grab my stuff from there, but my mind kept winding through the things his father told me. - ' There must be some reason why he changed so suddenly something his father missed. '
