chapter 19: beneath the mask

Felix Blackwood had spent years building walls around himself walls made of steel, power, and carefully controlled silence. But tonight, standing in his penthouse office with the city lights flickering below, he felt something crack.

Elena Carter was the reason.

She stood across from him, her arms crossed, her gaze sharp with defiance. The air between them was thick with unspoken words, unrelenting tension.

"You used me," Elena finally said, her voice quiet but laced with fire. "You knew from the beginning what I was looking for, and you let me walk straight into your world."

Felix sighed, running a hand through his hair. "And yet, you stayed."

Elena's jaw tightened. "Because I thought I was uncovering the truth." She took a step forward, her chest rising and falling with controlled breaths. "But the truth is, you're hiding just as much as the people you claim to be against."

Felix turned toward the window, staring out at the city he controlled. "You think this is black and white?" His voice was low, dangerous. "There is no good or bad in this game, Elena. There is only power, and those willing to wield it."

She let out a humorless laugh. "And you're what? The hero in all this?"

Felix turned back to her, and for the first time, something raw flashed in his eyes. "No. I've never been the hero."

Elena swallowed hard, caught between frustration and something else something dangerously close to understanding.

Felix stepped toward her, his voice softer now. "You want the truth, Elena? Then stop looking at me like I'm the villain."

A pause. A moment too long.

Then the door burst open.

Liam rushed in, his expression grave. "We have a problem."

Felix's entire demeanor shifted. He was back to being the controlled CEO, the calculated man who never lost his grip.

"What is it?"

Liam glanced at Elena before hesitating. "We need to talk. Alone."

Felix nodded, already striding toward the door. But before he left, he glanced back at Elena.

"Stay here."

Elena watched him disappear, her heart pounding. Something was shifting—something bigger than her, bigger than them. And she had the sinking feeling that whatever came next…

Would change everything.
