Chapter 23: A Game of Masks

Raine locked her phone, stuffing it into her jacket pocket. If someone thought they could shake her, they were dead wrong.

But she needed to act fast. Who else knew? How close were they?

Her thoughts were interrupted when the door swung open.

Zayne.

His sharp eyes scanned her face, and she knew—he saw something.

"Who pissed you off this time?" he asked, leaning against the wall.

Raine forced a smirk. "What, worried about me?"

Zayne clicked his tongue. "Hardly. But I don't like seeing my competition looking like they've seen a ghost."

Her body tensed. If only he knew.

She shrugged, playing it off. "Just thinking about how easy it'll be to beat you on stage."

Zayne grinned, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Cute. But you can't lie to me, sweetheart."

Raine's smirk didn't waver. "Who says I'm lying?"

Zayne studied her for a beat longer before pushing off the wall. "Keep your secrets, then. Just don't let them destroy you."

As he walked away, Raine exhaled.
