Raine shoved her phone back into her pocket, exhaling slowly. Whoever they were, they wanted her rattled.
Too bad. She wasn't that girl anymore.
Footsteps echoed down the stairwell. She tensed, instincts sharp.
"Skipping curfew already?"
Kairo.
She rolled her eyes. "And you're following me already? Didn't take long."
Kairo smirked, stepping closer. Too close. His golden eyes studied her like he was peeling back her layers, searching for something she wasn't ready to give.
"You looked deep in thought," he murmured. "Care to share?"
Raine leaned against the railing, crossing her arms. "Unless you've suddenly become my therapist, no."
Kairo chuckled, low and amused. "Fine. Keep your secrets." He paused, then added, "But be careful, Raine."
She raised a brow. "Of what?"
He tilted his head. "Ghosts. They have a way of creeping up when you least expect it."
Her breath hitched. Did he know? Or was this just another one of his games?
Either way, she wasn't playing.
She pushed past him, her voice steady. "I don't believe in ghosts."
Kairo's smirk deepened.
"You should."
