Chapter 39 (Author’s POV)

The space beside her was cold.

Amanda stirred, reaching out instinctively-only to grasp at empty sheets. Her lashes fluttered open, the golden morning light spilling through the curtains in soft, hazy streaks. For a moment, she lay still, her thoughts clouded with sleep, the weight of last night pressing down on her chest like an anchor. The tension. The unspoken words. The look in Raphael's eyes before he had disappeared into the bathroom, shutting the door between them.

She turned her head, half-expecting to see him beside her, his dark hair tousled, his body relaxed, his smirk lazy with sleep. But there was nothing. Just an empty bed. Just silence.

And a note.

Amanda sat up slowly, her heart already sinking. A single sticky note was placed neatly on the pillow where he should have been.

I had to take care of something. I'll meet you for lunch.

Her fingers tightened around the slip of paper.

That was it?
