RESURRECTION

It was as if he had opened his eyes within a white sheet surrounding him. Everything was engulfed in whiteness. In front of him stood dozens of columns arranged side by side. Beneath each column, the name of a different god was inscribed. The columns had fluted bodies, yet no matter how much he focused his gaze, he could not see where they extended to.

How had he come here? Who was he? Did he have a name or a surname? How were these questions even coming to his mind?

With no answers to any of his questions, he simply looked around, trying to make sense of his surroundings. Yet, it wasn't until he heard a woman's voice echoing inside his head that he regained a sense of self.

"You are you. You are a brilliant attorney who achieved great success at a young age, only to be poisoned and killed. You are Araki Yuma."

Guided by these words, memories that he hadn't even realized he had forgotten began resurfacing in perfect chronological order. His family, his school life, his close relationships, his career, and his wife. He remembered everything again, yet he felt neither sorrow nor any positive or negative emotions. He simply looked ahead and noticed golden dust particles gently falling from the unseen tops of the cream-colored stone columns.

"Had it been falling from the beginning?" he wondered.

The voice inside his head continued speaking.

"Each of the columns before you represents a god. You are someone who has used your resources exceptionally well and never wasted your time. Because of this, you have been granted a right—a right to a new life. But in the place you are going, neither the rules of your past life will apply nor will you have a body of your own. You will inhabit the body of someone who has devoted themselves to the gods. Now, decide which god will bless you, and touch that god's column."

Yuma began reading the names inscribed on the columns, starting with the one directly in front of him. As he moved to his right, he read more names: War, Agriculture, Magic, Love, Power, Life, Resilience, Speed, Sea, Wind, Disease, Healing—there were dozens, perhaps even hundreds of gods.

Yet, he stopped in front of only one column.

Yuma read the name and the domain of the deity, then placed his hand on the column. From the point where his palm made contact, an intensely bright golden light erupted, gradually enveloping his entire body.

Moments later, he found himself drooling in his sleep, his face resting on a desk.
