Chapter 5: A New Routine
Over the next few days, Liam settled into a routine. He and Maya continued to sit together in English, and their essay project gave them plenty of excuses to talk. Their cafeteria table became a familiar place, with Chloe occasionally teasing Liam in a way that was more playful than mean-spirited.
Liam also introduced Maya to Ethan, his best friend since middle school. Ethan was more outgoing than Liam, cracking jokes and making conversations flow easily. To Liam's relief, Maya and Ethan got along well, their personalities balancing out in a way that made their little group feel natural.
One afternoon, Maya caught Liam absentmindedly sketching in the margins of his notebook. "Wait," she said, leaning closer. "You draw too? First music, now art? What can't you do?"
Liam flushed. "It's just doodling."
Maya studied the sketch—a simple, expressive face. "Well, your 'just doodling' is better than most people's actual effort. Seriously, Liam, you should share your talents more."
Liam wasn't sure how to respond. But he couldn't deny that hearing Maya say it made him feel a little braver.
