Chapter 6: A Small Step
A week into the school year, Liam and Maya had settled into an easy rhythm. English class was their shared space, a small part of the day where conversation flowed naturally. Their cafeteria table had become familiar, with Chloe and Ethan adding their own energy to the mix.
One afternoon, as they left English together, Maya nudged Liam's shoulder. "You never did let me read your essay."
Liam hesitated. "It's not that great."
"I'll be the judge of that," she said, holding out her hand expectantly. "C'mon, I helped you brainstorm. I deserve a sneak peek."
With a sigh, Liam pulled out his notebook and handed it over. He watched anxiously as Maya read, her eyes scanning the pages with focus. When she finally looked up, she was smiling.
"Liam," she said, "this is good. Really good."
He blinked. "You think so?"
"Yes! You wrote about music in a way that makes people feel it. I love how you described the first time you played for someone else." She grinned. "I get why you were nervous, but you should be proud of this."
Liam felt warmth creep up his neck. "Thanks."
Maya handed the notebook back. "So, when do I get to hear you play?"
Liam's stomach flipped. "Uh—"
Maya laughed at his panicked expression. "I'll take that as a 'not yet.' But one day, Liam. One day."
