Shattered Illusions

Lena's breathing was shallow as they moved through the narrow alleyways, each step careful, deliberate. The city felt different now—more dangerous, more alive with unseen eyes watching their every move. The parchment detailing the Black Key's location was tucked safely in Elias' cloak, but the weight of it felt heavier than gold.

"We can't stay in Blackmere much longer," Elias murmured as they pressed themselves against a cold stone wall, avoiding a passing patrol. "Cassian's men will be combing the streets for us."

Jorin wiped the blood from his lip, his face still bruised from their last fight. "Then where do we go? We can't just run forever."

Lena's fingers clenched around the dagger at her hip. "We go to the vault."

Both men turned to her, surprise flickering in their eyes.

"You want to go straight to the source?" Jorin asked, brows furrowing. "You think we're ready for that?"

Lena's gaze was sharp, unwavering. "I think if we hesitate, Cassian will find it first. We don't have time to wait."

Elias exhaled, looking down the empty street before them. "Then we need to leave before dawn. Orin might have a way out of the city."

Jorin scoffed. "You trust that old snake?"

"He got us into the cathedral," Lena pointed out. "We don't have a choice."

The trio moved quickly, keeping to the shadows as they made their way back to Orin's hideout. The air was thick with tension, the knowledge of what lay ahead making every step feel heavier. When they arrived, Orin was already waiting for them, arms crossed, a knowing smirk on his lips.

"Knew you'd be back," he said. "You found something, didn't you?"

Lena didn't answer. Instead, she tossed a small coin purse onto the table. "We need a way out of Blackmere. Quietly."

Orin chuckled, shaking his head. "I like a woman who gets to the point." He pocketed the coins and gestured toward a faded map on the wall. "There's an old aqueduct that runs beneath the city, leads out past the gates. It's half-collapsed, but you might squeeze through."

"Half-collapsed?" Jorin repeated. "Sounds promising."

Orin smirked. "You could take your chances with the main roads. I hear Cassian's men are particularly fond of cutting throats."

Jorin scowled but said nothing.

Elias traced a finger along the map. "How do we get in?"

Orin pointed to a sewer grate not far from their location. "That'll get you into the tunnels. After that, it's up to you."

Lena nodded. "Then we leave now."

---

The sewers were worse than she had imagined. The stench was unbearable, and the air was thick with dampness. Rats skittered in the darkness, their tiny claws scratching against the stone. Lena forced herself to focus, pushing forward through the narrow passageways.

Jorin muttered curses under his breath as he waded through the filth. "Remind me never to take your advice again, Orin."

Elias, ever composed, led the way with a torch held high. "If this gets us out unseen, it's worth it."

They moved in silence, the sound of dripping water the only noise accompanying them. But then Lena heard something else—a faint echo, footsteps in the distance.

She froze. "We're not alone."

Elias extinguished the torch in an instant, plunging them into darkness. They pressed themselves against the cold, damp walls, listening as the footsteps grew closer. Lena's heart pounded. Was it Cassian's men? City guards?

A shadow moved ahead, and then another. There were at least three figures, their whispers carrying through the tunnel.

"Spread out. They were seen heading this way."

Lena bit back a curse. They had been followed.

Elias leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear. "We need to move."

She nodded, gripping her dagger tightly. Jorin took the lead this time, guiding them down a side passage, hoping to lose their pursuers in the maze of tunnels. But the footsteps behind them quickened, their pursuers realizing they had caught on.

Lena made a split-second decision. "Go. I'll hold them off."

Jorin turned sharply. "Are you insane? You can't take them alone."

"I don't plan to." She shoved the map into his hands. "Find the exit. I'll catch up."

Elias hesitated, but he saw the determination in her eyes. He grabbed Jorin by the shoulder, forcing him forward. "We'll be waiting."

Lena exhaled, steadying herself. The figures emerged from the darkness, blades glinting in the dim light.

Cassian's men.

"Where's the map, girl?" one of them sneered. "Hand it over, and we'll make this quick."

Lena smiled coldly. "You're assuming I'd make it easy."

Then she attacked.

Steel met steel in a vicious clash. Lena ducked low, driving her dagger into the first man's thigh. He howled, staggering back. Another lunged, but she sidestepped, slashing across his arm.

The third man was fast. Too fast. He caught her wrist, twisting it hard enough to make her cry out. Her dagger clattered to the ground.

"Stupid girl," he hissed. "You should have run."

Pain shot through her as he forced her to her knees. But Lena wasn't finished. With a swift movement, she slammed her forehead into his nose. He cursed, loosening his grip just enough for her to break free.

She didn't hesitate. She grabbed her fallen dagger and drove it into his chest.

The man collapsed, gasping for breath. The others, wounded and wary, hesitated.

Lena didn't give them a chance to regroup. She bolted, sprinting through the tunnels, her lungs burning. She followed the faint echoes of Jorin and Elias ahead, willing herself forward.

Just as she thought she might collapse, she saw light ahead. A broken grate, leading to the outside world.

She stumbled through, gasping for air. Strong hands caught her—Elias.

"Lena," he breathed, relief flooding his face. "You're alive."

She nodded, still catching her breath. Jorin was already pulling her forward. "Come on, we need to keep moving."

They emerged into the open air, the night sky stretching above them. The city was behind them now, its dangers left in the shadows.

But as Lena looked ahead, she knew the real journey was just beginning.

The vault awaited. And with it, the secrets of the Black Key.
