chapter 7

As Ethin entered room 314, his three roommates greeted him. Alex was chatting excitedly on his comms device, while Jake lounged on his bunk, reading a book. Ben sat at the desk, staring intently at his datapad.

Alex looked up, curious. "Hey, you're the new guy, right? I'm Alex. Welcome to our humble abode." Jake nodded in greeting, while Ben grunted, not looking up from his datapad.

Alex continued to chat, barely pausing for breath. "So, what took you so long to get here? Registration was three days ago." Ethin shrugged, feeling self-conscious. "I had some issues with my registration. But I'm here now."

Ben finally looked up, his eyes narrowing slightly. "You're ranked pretty low, huh?" Ethin nodded, feeling embarrassed. Alex jumped in, his voice booming across the room. "Hey, don't worry about it, man! We're all in this together. Well, except for Ben here, who's some kind of genius."

Ben rolled his eyes, while Jake chuckled. Ethin smiled, feeling more at ease.

Alex asked, "So, are you a Vigor, Terra, or Arcane?" Ethin hesitated. "I don't really know." Alex's curiosity got the better of him. "Let me see your badge." Ethin handed it over, and Alex examined it. "You don't know your branch? That's weird."

Ethin shrugged. "I've never really been sure. My badge is red, though." Ben looked up from his datapad. "Red is actually Arcane. You're an Arcane." Jake nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I'm an Arcane too."

Ethin's eyes widened slightly. "Really? What about you, Alex?" Alex grinned. "I'm a Vigor." Ethin turned to Ben. "What about you, Ben? What's your branch?" Ben looked up, his expression serious. "I'm a Terra."

The room fell silent for a moment, as if the revelation of their branches had created a newfound sense of understanding among them. Alex broke the silence, his voice booming across the room. "Well, now that we've got that settled, let's get to know each other better." Ethin smiled, feeling a sense of belonging he hadn't experienced before.

After the introductions, Ethin felt overwhelmed. He excused himself, took a small bite of the food Alex offered, and decided to rest. As he lay down on his bunk, he couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.

The next morning, Ethin woke up feeling refreshed. He got dressed and ready for his first day of classes. As he walked with his roommates to their first class, he noticed they were heading in different directions.

"Hey, aren't we all going to the same class?" Ethin asked. Alex chuckled. "No way, man. Our ranks are too low. We're stuck in lower-level classes."

Ben explained, "Our ranks determine class levels. Since we're all relatively low-ranked, we're stuck in remedial classes." Jake added, "Yeah, and classes are separated by branch. Vigors like Alex will have different classes than Arcane like us."

Ethin felt disappointed. He had been looking forward to learning more about his branch and developing his skills. As they walked, he noticed students grouped by their branches.

The group arrived at their first class, History. The teacher began to lecture, and Ethin zoned out, his mind wandering to his branch and rank. He wondered what it would take to improve his rank and join higher-level classes. A sense of determination rose within him.
