" You said you wouldn't be home." He was surprised to see me at the door when he arrived and I understood.
"I finally got fired!"I joked.
"What?!"He was still at the door and I was expecting my welcome kiss. He won't forget that, never. Or maybe tonight, because he just stood there, his mouth agap in shock.
"Won't you at least come in?"
"Oh I'm sorry. "He embraced me and kissed my forehead. I blushed.
"You are joking, right?"He said, already reading my mind.
Was I sacked?
That's what it looks like anyway.
"We'll gist after dinner. I made noodles and egg sauce. Go freshen up and the table will be set."
"Okay babe."He winked at me and left.
I sighed, remembering the man I met earlier at the library. He's not in any way like my Kyle.
Kyle is more of an athlete than an ordinary man. Though, he was not spectacularly built. He was my height—five feet nine and a half inches. He weighed a hundred and fifty pounds, a galling eighty pounds more than I did, which flowed from his legs to torso around shoulders to arms and handsomely squared jaws in an uninterrupted, unemphatic unity of strength. His daily work out pays off well. He needs to keep fit, for his job. And I need to keep sane, for my job.
I rushed back to my laptop on the couch and continued my unending research on Paige Kam. So far, I've discovered that she never did social media. Or maybe she used an anonymous name. Cause I didn't find a single social media account that had her name or her picture on it.
Why?
Not the social type?
Even I as an introvert, had one while in high school.
About her family. Jude Kam is all over the internet, with his philanthropic duties and his innovations. He never mentioned he had a niece on the internet. He married once and had a daughter. That isn't new news. The famous Annabelle Steele died in a plane crash with her daughter. On their private jet.
So where does Paige come from? A certain Leo Kam, who died some ages ago with his wife some ages ago, killed by an unknown assassin, had a daughter. That's Paige Kam.
How complex?
I must see Paige Kam tomorrow. Let's see if she'll say something. I just pray she does.
And I'll need Kyle's help with...
"Table is set!"I heard his voice and realised that I had forgotten to set the table. And my lovely husband has done that for me.
"Is it the same case?"
"I guess I'm stuck on it now. Thank you Kyle."
I packed up my laptop and joined him at the table.
"You look stressed,"He said.
"I should be saying that. Hope you didn't catch bad guys today?" I said playfully.
He laughed. "That's my job!"
"There was a tournament. For promotion. We do a lot today, just a few minor cases."
"Thank God. How was the tournament?"
"What do you expect, babe?"
"You loose."I chuckled.
"Yeah I did ", I sprawled out his hands, showcasing his mighty muscles, laughing. Huh...he's rubbing it on my face.
"My big baby never loses."
"You can say that again."He winked.
We were quiet till we finished our food and I packed the plate and joined him on the couch.
"He didn't fire me. But he practically did. I was suspended for four months without pay. "
"Wow."He wowed.
"Not only that. He forced the case on me."
"I saw that coming."
"Me too." I said. "She listened to me. That's enough to make me happy. I was at the station today. I told her to plead her innocence. Mark would have taken her signature finally. But she listened to me. Do you think there's something else?"
"Obviously. Your guts might be right. If there wasn't a story, she wouldn't have listened to you."
"You think she's gonna talk?"
"Hm."He nodded. "I'm surprised though. How did you get her to listen to you? I've heard rumours. She yells at everyone. Even with policemen, she had to be kept in a separate prison because she was too violent. She hurts herself too."
My jaw dropped.
"Where...did you get all these from?"
"Did you forget suddenly who I am?"
I almost laughed. "I'm sorry, I was just too surprised."
"No, I'm surprised. How did you get her to listen to you without getting a bite from her?"
"Are you... exaggerating?"
"I'm serious. I'm not "
"Well..."I blushed. "I'm a lawyer. I guess that's what differentiates us from policemen."
"Even lawyers. Why do you think no one took her case? You think no one tried?"
I actually thought no one had tried. How selfish of me? But why would they allow her violence to make them quit? Isn't that supposed to send a signal? A signal that something has been really wrong with her?
Mentally...
"Well, I didn't get bitten and I'm going to see her tomorrow."
"Any leads?"
"None."
"You still want to do this?"
"To be honest, I don't have a choice anymore. I have to win this case or I might never get back to work. It's all written there."I pointed to the white envelope on the arm of the chair.
Kyle took it and glanced through the letter.
"Mark Anthony must be a really crazy dude."
"Crazy, yeah. And desperate."
That seemed wrong.
Who's desperate here?
Kamila or Mark?
No, it's Mark.
I'm not desperate. I just perceived injustice and wanted to tackle it.
"I wish I had enough confidence. That paper scares me. It's just four months. I've never done this before."
"Well, if there isn't a first, there wouldn't be an expert."
"It's not like that. I'm not a detective, Kyle."
"I can always help you with that."
"You have your own job. I wouldn't want to disturb you."
"I'll do my best, wife. It's my responsibility. I know certainly that mark would be ashamed in the end."
"I pray so. First, help me check Kam's criminal records. I can't find anything useful on the internet."
I yawned.
"You'd better get to bed. It seems tomorrow's gonna be a long day."He said to me and I nodded, sleepy.
It's really gonna be long...
