He woke up with a kick, made by his legs. Another nightmare!
He sniffed soberly and dragged himself to the bathroom to wash off the dream not only from his face but from his life. She might be missing now, but she'll be back. He told himself.
He was on a compulsory leave and when he checked the time, he saw that he really needed the leave. At first when his boss asked him to stay off work until she is found he argued. To him, it was better that he was at work. He will be more miserable if he's alone without her. He and his team has worked so hard for the past two days, even at night. He settled in late the night before because he had visited a dead trail.
It's always been a dead trail. He dragged himself down the stairs to the kitchen, but could not enter.
Everywhere smells of her.
He kicked a pillow on the rug and sat by the couch. The same way they sit every night. They prefer to sit on the rug than the couch. He sucked on a tear.
"Shit…" he hissed, throwing away another pillow. He stared at her last message for minutes without thinking about anything and then for another round of about an hour, when his thoughts finally began to make sense.
"That is it." he said to himself as he dropped his phone on the couch and headed to the only place he had not visited since she got missing —Kamila's office. It was right beside his, in separate rooms and distinguishable even from the door. Kamila loved purple, and she decorated her door with just that. And She pastes quotes on her door, every week, most times, a bible passage that had worked for her the previous week.
While his door, just the usual oil polished door, and its masculine interior. He walked into the once sacred room, her usual lavender perfume scent filling his nostrils.
She's here. She's always here. The scent spoke.
He found her laptop computer on its usual spot and opened it.
Luckily, Kamila has informed him about her password a long time ago. They had this truth and dare game during a night out, and she had to reveal all her passcodes to him.
Kam&kyler
The first time he heard that from her, he laughed. It was funny, but now it isn't. It's the key to log in to this computer now that she's hurt.
It never crossed his mind that she would get this hurt on her job. It was his risky job, and it was Kamila who was always scared.
He logged in and thanked her for her amazing organizational skills, when he easily located the folder for Kam's case. There wasn't much but basic information she collected about Paige. He saw a report on her meeting with a so-called Samuel.
She never mentioned it. He thought. Then he remembered that it was the night before she disappeared. They had a movie night with their family friends. She must have forgotten.
Then he saw:
« She claims the Late Annabelle Steele is her mother. I sense politics here. »
"Aha!" He gasped when he spotted «And Jude Kam is her father».
This is too much. She should have said something about it. He thought.
He was standing before he realized he had decided. He would meet that Paige Kam today!
Now!
He took his car key and rushed out of the house.
*
She was the full definition of "a mess". Her thick brows were knitted as if it has been scratched severally. Her unwashed hair was scattered, though tied in a dough. She had the figure of a dejected fallen hero and her lips bled. Kyle sighed. This isn't the worst he has seen of inmates, but it's depressing that his Kamila got so obsessed with her, a wretch.
She was quiet and he understood.
They don't really talk until they hear you speak.
"Hello. " he said. " I'm Kyle Dickson…"
She raised her head, curiosity written all over her face, but she still didn't utter a word.
" Police." He flashed his ID in her face. " My wife, Kamila Dickson, was your lawyer and…"
He seemed to have decided. When Kamila finally comes back, she would not do this case again!
Never!
" Why is she not here?" Paige whispered, asking that had been on her mind ever since she saw him. Not that she noticed any resemblance but that after Kamila left that day, the day she gave her all she needed to know, no one had visited her again. And she was very bothered. Worried that someone else, has been caught on the web of her life's complexity.
Kyle remembered Kamila's message: " If anything goes wrong with me. Make sure Paige doesn't hear about it."
Kamila must have a candid reason. Besides, what difference would it make whether she knows or not? The so-called Paige is stuck behind bars, her knowledge of her missing lawyer would make no difference.
" she has been very busy with work, so I've come to represent her." he said.
Paige arched her thick brows,, and he suddenly felt too lazy to explain.
" That's strange."
" Yeah, some personal stuffs that will be better if she explains herself when she's back."
He saw her relax and sighed.
She isn't a psycho, after all.
" So can we talk on now?" He said. " Why you killed your dad?"
She squeezed her face as if experiencing some kind of discomfort. " i asked Hope to find my mum. I gave her an address. Didn't she find anything? Or have the house been cleared before she got there?"
So, Kamila had gone to the house for something. Then her kidnap is surely from the case.
" Oh yeah, she got a lot. I guess she'd talk about that when she gets back with you." He said. "She was just too worried about you,, so she asked me to pay you a visit."
" nice. Unfortunately." she murmured.
" Well then. We should talk about something else." he smiled, realizing how quick his reasoning has gotten and how much it hurt as going to help him it think goes just as smooth as possible. " Do you know who else would have wanted your dad dead?"
She hesitated. " You're a policeman."
He nodded, hopefully.
" You sound just like one."
" thanks." he smiled, taking it immediately as a compliment.
" Are you sure Hope sent you to me?"
