Chapter Six: Crossing The Line

Lin Xinyi's breath came in sharp gasps. The tension in the room was thick too thick.

Chen Wei's hands were pressed against the wall, trapping her between his burning body and the cold surface. His usual self control was crumbling.

His jaw clenched, muscles tensed as he fought whatever Lu Yifan had put in that drink.

He was losing.

"Xinyi…" his voice was dangerously low, hoarse. "Get out."

Her heart pounded. She knew she should leave. Every logical part of her screamed at her to run.

But she stayed.

"I'm not leaving you like this," she whispered.

Chen Wei's eyes darkened, his breathing heavier. "You don't understand. If you stay"

He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't have to.

Xinyi's body tensed as his fingers brushed against her wrist a touch so light yet scorching.

He was holding back. Fighting with everything he had.

But for how long.

The tension stretched between them like a wire ready to snap.

Xinyi had always known Chen Wei was dangerous. But this this was different. This was raw. Unfiltered. Unrestrained.

His lips were inches from hers. One move and

A loud buzz shattered the moment.

His phone.

Chen Wei exhaled sharply, forcing himself to step back. His hands clenched into fists. A lifeline.

Xinyi swallowed hard, her pulse still erratic as she turned away.

"Answer it," she muttered.

Chen Wei ran a hand through his hair before finally checking the screen. His eyes turned cold instantly.

"Lu Yifan."

Xinyi stiffened. That bastard.

Chen Wei answered, his voice icy. "You have ten seconds."

A laugh came from the other end. "Relax, CEO Chen. I just wanted to check on you. How are you feeling?"

Chen Wei's jaw twitched. He knew.

"I'm fine," he said flatly. "Is that all?"

Lu Yifan chuckled. "You're stronger than I thought. But don't worry, the night is still young."

Click.

The line went dead.

Chen Wei cursed under his breath, tossing the phone onto the bed. His breathing was still uneven, his body still burning.

Xinyi hesitated before stepping closer. "What did he mean?"

Chen Wei exhaled harshly, his control still hanging by a thread. "The drug it won't wear off easily."

Her stomach tightened.

"How long?"

He didn't answer. That was answer enough.

Minutes passed in heavy silence.

Then a knock at the door.

Both of them tensed.

Xinyi moved first, but Chen Wei grabbed her wrist. His grip was strong too strong.

She looked up, surprised.

His expression was unreadable. But his eyes there was something dangerous in them.

He wasn't thinking straight.

"Chen Wei," she whispered carefully, "let go."

His fingers flexed then finally released her.

She stepped back, taking a deep breath before opening the door.

It was the doctor.

Chen Wei must have called him earlier.

The older man stepped in, his expression serious. "CEO Chen, the drug you ingested is designed to enhance desire and lower inhibitions. It won't fade completely until morning."

Xinyi's face heated. So it was that kind of drug.

The doctor continued, "I can give you an injection to help suppress the effects, but it won't be instant."

Chen Wei nodded curtly. "Do it."

As the doctor prepared the shot, Xinyi exhaled slowly. Crisis averted.

But as the needle went in, Chen Wei's gaze flickered toward her.

And she realized something.

Even drugged, he had never lost control.

He had never truly been a danger to her.

Because no matter what, Chen Wei would never hurt her.

By sunrise, the drug's effects had finally faded.

Chen Wei was back to his usual composed self, buttoning up his crisp white shirt as if last night had never happened.

Xinyi sat on the couch, watching him.

He hadn't said much since the doctor left.

Finally, she broke the silence. "Do you want to talk about it?"

Chen Wei buttoned the last cuff and looked at her. His gaze was unreadable.

"There's nothing to talk about."

Xinyi frowned. "Chen Wei"

He walked over, placing a hand under her chin. A sudden touch, but controlled. Calculated.

"I won't let something like this happen again," he said quietly. "You have my word."

Xinyi searched his face. "You were never going to hurt me, were you?"

A shadow crossed his eyes, but his voice was steady. "No. Never."

Something inside her chest tightened.

Before she could say anything else, his phone buzzed again.

Lu Yifan.

Chen Wei's jaw clenched.

"Stay here," he said. And this time, it wasn't a request.

He turned, grabbing his coat and walking out.

Xinyi stared after him. Something had changed.

And she wasn't sure if it scared her or something else.

An hour later, Xinyi received a call.

A strange number.

She hesitated before answering. "Hello?"

A smooth, amused voice responded.

"Miss Lin, it's a pleasure. I'm sure by now you understand the position you're in."

Her blood ran cold. Lu Yifan.

"What do you want?" she asked, forcing her voice to stay calm.

A soft chuckle. "Your fiancé may have avoided my little trap last night, but how many times do you think he can protect you?"

Xinyi's grip tightened on the phone.

Lu Yifan continued, his tone almost lazy. "Watch your back, Miss Lin. Because next time I won't be so kind."

Click.

The call ended.

Xinyi exhaled shakily, gripping her phone tight .
