The tipping point

Chapter 30: The Tipping Point

Elias felt the weight of the room shift. He had rattled Vale, even if only slightly, and in this game of control, even the smallest crack was an advantage. But he also knew one thing—Lucian Vale wasn't the type to take a loss lightly.

As the dealer prepared to shuffle a new deck, Vale raised a hand. "Enough games," he said, his voice laced with quiet authority. "Let's talk business."

Elias leaned back in his chair, giving an amused smirk. "Business? I thought we were just here for a friendly game."

Vale chuckled, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Everything is business, detective. And right now, you're interfering with mine."

Collins tensed beside Elias, but the detective remained unfazed. "Funny. I was about to say the same thing."

Vale exhaled slowly, then motioned to one of his men. A folder was placed on the table in front of Elias. "Inside are details of a deal. Walk away from this case, and you walk away a rich man. More money than you'd ever make chasing criminals."

Elias didn't even open it. He simply pushed the folder back toward Vale. "You think you can buy me?"

Vale's smirk returned, but this time, there was an unmistakable edge of menace behind it. "Everyone has a price, Mercer. Even you."

Elias held his gaze, unflinching. "Then you should know—I'm very expensive. And you? You can't afford me."

For a long moment, neither man spoke. The room seemed to shrink, the tension pulling tighter.

Then Vale leaned forward, his voice a quiet threat. "I was hoping you'd say that. Now, I don't have to pretend anymore."

The game was over.

The real war had begun.
