Chapter 31: The Price of Peace

Power came with a weight Ren had never imagined.

He stood atop the city walls at dawn, watching the horizon burn with soft gold. Below, the city stirred—children laughing, vendors opening stalls, hunters preparing for raids. A world spinning as if it hadn't almost broken.

As if he hadn't changed it.

He could feel everything now. Whispers from the dungeon. Tremors beneath the city. A thousand unseen threads tied to his name. His very existence altered the balance of things. People watched him differently—not with fear, not with awe, but with distance. As if he were no longer one of them.

Even his mother smiled at him with sorrow behind her eyes.

Even Yui flinched when his shadow moved on its own.

And Kaede… Kaede watched him with loyalty—but also with doubt.

They loved him.

But they were beginning to fear him.

The light inside him clashed against the void, each demanding a different path. But one choice stood between them:

Erase their memories.

Wipe himself from their hearts.

Let them live in peace, unburdened by his shadow.

The spell was simple now. A ripple of light, a thread of void. All it would take was a whisper and a breath.

He stood outside their home that night. Yui's laughter echoed faintly from inside. His mother's humming. The clink of dishes. Kaede's soft voice.

He raised his hand.

And then he lowered it.

Tears welled in his eyes.

"I've fought so hard not to forget who I am," he whispered. "I won't make that choice for them."

He turned away.

If they wanted distance, he would give them space.

If they feared him, he would earn back their trust.

But he wouldn't erase the love they gave him.

Even if it hurt.

He walked back into the night—alone, powerful, and still human.

The void stirred softly.

And, for once, it agreed.
