Mission Reminder

Emily's fingers tightened slightly around the clipboard, but her expression remained neutral.

"Yeah," Alex said casually. "She was my nurse a few days ago."

"That's right. I was assigned to Mr. Collins when he was first admitted." Emily nodded and smiled at them. She didn't know why, but it felt awkward.

Maybe it was because something beyond professional happened between her and Alex.

Sienna and Mia exchanged a quick, playful glance.

Claire, who was looking at the two, shot her daughters with a pointed look.

"Enough, you two," she said as she crossed her arms, her tone was firm but gentle.

"Emily is a nice lady who has taken care of your brother. I've talked to her multiple times already."

Sienna and Mia straightened slightly; their playful expressions slowly died down under their mother's gaze.

"We weren't saying anything, Mom," Sienna mumbled as she pouted. 

"Yeah, we were just…" Mia trailed off, exchanging another glance with her sister before sighing. "Fine. Fine…"

Emily chuckled lightly before offering Claire a small smile.

"It's alright, Mrs. Adams. I'm used to siblings teasing each other."

Claire's expression softened as she turned to Emily. Her expression was apologetic. "I hope they didn't make you feel uneasy."

"Not at all," Emily assured her, keeping her tone polite. "I'm just here to check Mr. Collins's vitals."

"Of course. Go ahead."

Claire gave a small nod. She stepped aside to give Emily space.

Emily approached Alex's bedside, carefully checking his pulse and making notes on her clipboard. Alex remained still, his expression unreadable as she worked.

On the 5 days that he hadn't seen Emily, nothing major changed in her, except that she looked more glowing. She must have had a good time while she was away.

Meanwhile, Sienna and Mia stayed quiet, but their eyes were subtly looking between Alex and Emily. They remained curious despite their mother's warning.

As Emily placed the stethoscope against Alex's chest, she kept her voice professional.

"Breathe in… and out."

Alex did as what he was told, but he was clearly aware of how close she was. When their eyes met, Emily's face slightly reddened, but she didn't say a word.

Emily was initially looking forward to seeing Alex again. She wanted to explain that she wasn't around because they had some family celebration. But now she couldn't say anything because there were a lot of people around.

Maybe she'll just come back again later at night.

In the middle of her thoughts, Emily couldn't help but blush when she remembered the kiss that they shared. She had to admit that she missed the feeling already.

It was weird since she wasn't like this in the past. She wondered what was with Alex for her to be like this.

"Is it done now?" Alex questioned when he realized that he had been breathing for a whole minute now without any reaction from Emily.

"Oh…" Emily was pulled back to reality. She quickly stood up and nodded. She didn't realize that she had been staring at Alex's face for so long.

"Everything looks good so far. You've been recovering well. If this continues well, then, no doubt that you'll be able to go home soon." There was a smile on Emily's face, but why was she feeling quite disappointed?

"That's great to hear," Claire said with a huge smile on her face. Her heart was beating fast, clearly gladdened by it.

"Thank you for taking care of him."

"It's my job, Mrs. Adams," Emily replied with a polite smile. She turned back to Alex, her tone a bit lighter. "Still, try not to push yourself too much. Even if you're feeling better, take it slow and just rest."

"Got it." Alex nodded.

Emily hesitated for a brief moment before glancing at Claire.

"I'll come back later for another check-up."

"Of course," Claire agreed. "You're always welcome here."

Emily gave a final nod before excusing herself and heading for the door. As soon as she left, Sienna and Mia turned to Alex with knowing looks.

"So," Sienna started, leaning forward. "You and Nurse Emily, huh?"

"Don't start." Alex groaned. 

Claire chuckled. "But isn't she pretty, sweetheart?"

Alex let out a long sigh, running a hand over his face.

"Claire, please don't encourage them."

"What? I'm just saying she's a lovely young woman. And she's been taking such good care of you." Claire simply smiled knowingly.

Sienna nudged Mia, grinning.

"Did you see the way she was looking at him? She totally zoned out when she was checking out Alex."

"Right? She was blushing too. That's not how you look at just any patient." Mia nodded, agreeing with her.

"You two need hobbies." Alex groaned again.

"Oh, but this is our hobby," Sienna teased. "Observing people and uncovering secrets."

Claire shook her head. She was also amused by her daughter's antics, but she knew that they were also just doing this because they cared for Alex.

"Alright, that's enough, you two." She turned back to Alex with a softer expression. "But really, sweetheart. She seems to care about you and she's pretty, right?"

It seemed like his mother wouldn't stop until she got an answer from him.

With a deep sigh, Alex nodded.

"Yeah, she's pretty." He could admit that since she really is.

Sienna and Mia gasped dramatically, clutching their chests as if Alex had just confessed to a life-altering secret.

"Oh my god," Sienna whispered, eyes wide with exaggerated shock. "Did you hear that, Mia?"

"I did," Mia nodded solemnly, mirroring her sister's expression. "Alex just admitted someone is pretty. This is a historic moment!"

Claire chuckled, shaking her head.

 "Alright, girls, that's enough."

Alex let out a relieved sigh, only for cContinueto continue with a warm smile.

"But I do think she's a lovely young woman. She seems to care about you a lot, sweetheart."

Alex groaned again, dropping his head back against the pillow.

"Not you too, Claire."

Claire simply patted his hand and gave him a knowing look.

"I'm just saying, if she comes back tonight, maybe you should talk to her properly."

Sienna and Mia exchanged another look, their teasing smirks returning.

Alex shook his head, exasperated. "You guys are unbelievable."

But deep inside, he was really curious if Emily would see him tonight.

As Alex lay back against the pillows, trying to ignore Sienna and Mia's giggling and Claire's knowing smiles, a sound echoed in his mind.
