Chapter 145 ⇾ This Carbink Has Super Strong Defense

Milo was probably having too much fun, as Cole and Magnolia were already standing not far from him, but he didn't notice.

A Wooloo was the first to spot the two people, kicking Milo with its foot. Only then did he realize someone had approached. He nimbly got up from the grass, still covered with grass clippings, and walked over with a smile.

"Dr. Magnolia, when did you arrive? And who is this young man?" Milo looked at Cole with confusion, thinking, 'Could this be the Professor's new assistant?'

The current Milo didn't look very old, around seventeen or eighteen, but he had an exceptionally robust and muscular build, with bulging muscles that seemed ready to burst at any moment. He stood a full head taller than Cole.

Although Cole was young, he was already over 1.7 meters tall. He estimated that this guy must be at least 1.9 meters.

Unlike other Gym Leaders or Elite Four members with prestigious backgrounds, Milo was just a genuine farm boy who had worked in the fields with Pokémon since childhood.

Perhaps it was a talent cultivated from a young age, but he found it very easy to bond with Grass-type Pokémon, which led him to become a trainer.

Don't misunderstand though — while Milo came from a farming family, it didn't mean they were poor. Cole was also involved in agricultural production, and he was far from poor himself.

Milo came from the type of family that had surplus wealth but wasn't quite at the level of being rich.

Most people involved in agriculture in the Pokémon world aren't poor, because agricultural production is inseparably connected to Pokémon in every aspect. Sometimes it even requires raising numerous Pokémon to maintain production activities, like Roman's ranch.

Since they can afford to raise many Pokémon, the family naturally couldn't be poor.

The truly poor people in the Pokémon world are the ordinary office workers living in big cities, working nine-to-five jobs, earning just enough to support their families, unable to do much else.

"I just arrived. If you won't come find me, then this old lady has to come find you." Magnolia said in exasperation.

"Hehe~ Sorry, Professor." Milo laughed sheepishly, "I was just about to leave to see you, but I didn't expect you'd already be here."

"This is Cole, the helper I brought for you." Magnolia introduced the two boys.

Upon hearing this, Milo's face immediately lit up with joy, "Really? I was worried it might be too much to handle alone. Now that I have a helper, I feel much more at ease."

As he spoke, he patted Cole on the shoulder.

Damn! How is this guy so strong? Cole felt like his shoulder was about to be dislocated. Could this muscle head be related to my Lopunny somehow?

"If that's the case, let's get going!" Magnolia said.

"Good, good, I'm ready anytime." Milo nodded repeatedly.

"I'm ready too." Cole said, enduring his aching shoulder.

"My car is parked at the foot of the mountain. We'll drive there."

And so, the two boarded her off-road vehicle and set off toward their destination. The driver was Magnolia's assistant, a young woman with glasses and long hair.

Magnolia hadn't told Cole where they were going, so he could only let the car take him out of Turffield and into a forest.

After passing through the forest, a valley with lush green grass appeared before him, along with a red pillar of light and a Dynamax Lurantis.

When Cole saw the huge Lurantis, it was sleeping with its eyes closed (probably).

Magnolia explained, "This valley used to be home to a group of Fomantis and a few Lurantis. They loved nothing more than lounging on the grass in the sunshine.

But Dynamax energy suddenly leaked, causing one of the Lurantis to Dynamax. The Lurantis couldn't handle such an enormous amount of energy, so it lost its mind and caused havoc in the valley, driving away all the other Fomantis and Lurantis.

Your task today is to defeat the Dynamax Lurantis, and then I'll close the Dynamax energy leak point, allowing the displaced Pokémon to return to their home."

"Understood."

Cole and Milo nodded simultaneously after hearing this.

As the car got closer to the Dynamax Lurantis, the sleeping Pokémon suddenly opened its eyes and let out a roar.

"Luran~"

Next, a huge green beam of light shot toward the off-road vehicle.

It was Max Overgrowth!

The young woman driving at the front had incredible skills. With a brake, a turn, and an acceleration, she easily avoided the attack.

Boom!!!

The attack from Max Overgrowth carved a deep trench in the ground, destroying the once beautiful grassland.

"Get out of the car!" Magnolia shouted.

Hearing this, Cole and Milo quickly opened the doors and jumped out. The next second, the car accelerated and vanished before their eyes. Magnolia and the young woman hadn't gotten out.

"Cole, Milo, I'm counting on you to handle Lurantis! I believe in you~"

Magnolia's voice drifted with the wind, leaving Cole and Milo bewildered.

"Let's do this!" Milo said, scratching the back of his head.

Cole nodded in response.

They simultaneously took out their Poké Balls and released their Pokémon. Cole sent out Carbink, while Milo released a Shiftry.

"Milo, you and Shiftry focus on attacking. Leave the defense to me and Carbink." Since his task this time was to assist, Cole chose to use Carbink.

"Alright, I'm counting on you!" Milo nodded.

Just then, Lurantis directed another Max Overgrowth toward them.

"Carb~"

Carbink leaped forward, raising a transparent shield that instantly intercepted the huge beam of light. Cole, Milo, and Shiftry remained unharmed behind the shield.

All the damage was absorbed by Carbink alone.

The green energy beam collided with the shield, countless energy fragments scattering to the sides. Where these splashed onto the grass, the once vibrant green immediately withered.

Milo looked at it in surprise, "Your Carbink is amazing!"

Although this Pokémon was known for its strong defense, not many could so easily withstand a Max Overgrowth attack.

Cole nodded with a smile, "It's decent."

"Now it's our turn to shine!" Milo shouted with vigor.

"Shiif~"

Shiftry echoed with a shout, then leaped forward, its body enveloped by a strong wind as if riding it in flight. With its talent for creating and moving with powerful winds, Shiftry's movements were exceptionally agile.

In the blink of an eye, Shiftry positioned itself directly above Lurantis. With a wave of its paw, crescent-shaped wind blades shot toward the giant Pokémon's face.

"Luran!!!"

Enraged by the attack, Lurantis raised its massive sleeve to swat at Shiftry, which remained suspended in mid-air.

"Shiftry!!!" Milo cried out in alarm.

At the same time, Cole called out, "Carbink!"

"Carbink~"

Carbink responded knowingly.

Boom!!!

The next second, Lurantis's sleeve hit Shiftry — but strangely, it wasn't Shiftry that cried out in pain, but Lurantis.

As Lurantis painfully withdrew its sleeve, Milo saw that Shiftry was encased in a square transparent box. Lurantis had hurt itself by striking the hard barrier.

The square transparent box was a Reflect created by Carbink on all six sides.

The next second, the transparent box disappeared. Just as Shiftry was about to fall, another Reflect appeared beneath its feet, providing a perfect point of leverage.

Shiftry gave Carbink a grateful look, while Milo stared at Cole in astonishment, thinking: This guy truly deserves to be Magnolia's helper. He's incredibly powerful! Even regular Gym Trainers don't have this level of skill!

Yet he had never heard of such a person before.

Milo might appear simple-minded, but he was far from it — he was actually rough on the outside but meticulous on the inside.

Then he saw Reflect barriers gradually appearing around Lurantis, and he instantly understood Cole's strategy.

"Shiftry, use the Reflect barriers around you to launch guerrilla attacks on Lurantis!"

"Shiftry!!"

Shiftry nodded, its figure instantly flashing between the Reflect barriers at a speed that made one dizzy. It looked for opportunities to attack Lurantis with Throat Chop.

Under these frequent attacks, the Dynamaxed Lurantis was knocked off balance. Each time it tried to swing its wide sleeves or use Dynamax moves against Shiftry, it missed, eventually ending up in a disheveled state.

"Luran!!!"

Lurantis was truly enraged now. It suddenly let out a skyward roar, the massive sound nearly forming a sonic attack.

The surrounding grassland suddenly surged with waves of green energy that quickly gathered around the Dynamaxed Lurantis. In the next second, its wounds began to heal.

The Grassy Terrain had taken effect!

The side effect of Max Overgrowth was creating Grassy Terrain.

Seeing this, Milo furrowed his brow, "This won't work! When Pokémon Dynamax, their stamina becomes extraordinarily abundant. If we add the Grassy Terrain recovering their health, it'll be very difficult to defeat it."

"What should we do?" Cole asked.

"We can only defeat Dynamax with Dynamax!"

Saying this, Milo rolled up his sleeve to reveal the Dynamax Band he wore underneath.

So that's it!

Seeing this, Cole also put on the Dynamax Band that Magnolia had temporarily given him.

Seeing him take out a Dynamax Band, Milo wasn't surprised, since Magnolia was one of the developers of the Dynamax Band. It was perfectly normal for someone invited by her to have one.

This was Cole's first time using Dynamax, so when he saw Milo recall Shiftry into its Poké Ball, he followed suit and recalled Carbink.

As intense vibrations came from his wrist, Cole saw red energy flowing from his Dynamax Band into the Poké Ball, which instantly grew larger than his head.

Seeing that Milo had already thrown his enlarged Poké Ball, Cole quickly threw his own.

In the next second, Dynamaxed Carbink and Dynamaxed Shiftry appeared side by side in front of the Dynamaxed Lurantis.

At first, the Dynamaxed Carbink was a bit uncomfortable with its new body, wobbling unsteadily and nearly falling over.

Seeing two massive creatures appear before it, Lurantis became even more furious and immediately launched Max Overgrowth at Carbink.

Shiftry noticed Carbink's discomfort — it had experienced the same reaction during its first Dynamax — so it used Max Guard to block the attack for Carbink.

In truth, Shiftry's block wasn't necessary. With Carbink's defensive power, it could have taken a direct hit from Lurantis without much issue, even without using any defensive moves.

But since Shiftry had kindly helped out, Carbink couldn't be ungrateful. It gave the other a grateful look and quickly launched Max Starfall at Lurantis!

A massive pink beam crashed into Lurantis, knocking it to the ground.

When Max Starfall activated, Misty Terrain appeared, covering Lurantis's Grassy Terrain. Now it finally had no means of recovery.

Misty Terrain was the side effect of Max Starfall.

Now Shiftry's attack arrived too — it unleashed Max Darkness, with the black beam following Carbink's Max Starfall to hit Lurantis.

"Luran!!!"

With a piercing cry, the Dynamaxed Lurantis rapidly shrank in size, returning to its normal form in the blink of an eye.

"We did it!" Milo let out a sigh of relief.

After defeating Lurantis, Carbink and Shiftry also quickly returned to their normal size.

"Carbink, well done." Cole praised, making his Pokémon very happy.

"Shiftry, good work." Milo said similarly.

Just as the two recalled their Pokémon into their Poké Balls, Magnolia's car swiftly pulled up in front of them.

Magnolia, supported by her female assistant as she got out of the car, smiled at the two and said, "I knew you two would handle this without a problem. Now we just need to close the leak point."

The group walked over to Lurantis, which lay unconscious in a huge crater. The female assistant nimbly jumped in and carried it out.

When she returned, besides carrying the unconscious Lurantis in her arms, the assistant was also holding a fist-sized object that resembled a stone.

"Professor."

The female assistant handed the stone-like object to Magnolia, who, without even looking at it, stuffed it directly into the pocket of her lab coat.

"Professor, what's that?" Milo asked curiously.

"Nothing important, just research material." Magnolia replied, clearly unwilling to disclose information about the object.

However, Cole vaguely guessed the identity of the item.

It was probably a Wishing Star, seemingly a fragment that had fallen from Eternatus. Like Dynamax energy, it could cause Pokémon to Dynamax and was also an essential raw material for making Dynamax Bands.
