Elias clenched his fists, his breath heavy with frustration. The strange man stood between him and the girl, his staff glowing with ominous energy. The swirling mist still coiled around her, but it had stopped advancing, as if awaiting a command.
He had two choices: heed the man's warning and leave the girl to whatever fate awaited her, or stand his ground and risk everything.
The answer was obvious.
"I don't know who you are," Elias growled, tightening his grip on his dagger. "But I'm not leaving without her."
The man tilted his head, his expression unreadable. "Brave," he mused. "But foolish."
With a flick of his wrist, the air around them trembled, and the cavern darkened. The runes on the walls pulsed violently, casting eerie shadows that danced like specters. The mist writhed in response, slithering toward Elias like a living nightmare.
The girl gasped, struggling against the spectral tendrils binding her. "Elias—don't! You can't win against him!"
Elias ignored her plea. He had fought against impossible odds before—faced mercenaries, beasts, and curses. He wouldn't abandon her now.
With a burst of speed, he lunged at the man, his dagger flashing in the dim light. But before the blade could reach its mark, an unseen force struck him square in the chest.
The impact sent him sprawling onto the cold stone floor. Pain exploded in his ribs as he gasped for air. He had been hit without the man even moving.
"You don't understand what you're interfering with," the man said, his voice carrying an eerie calm. "The girl is bound to the curse. She is the key. Whether she survives or not is no longer your concern."
Elias gritted his teeth, pushing himself up. "That's not your decision to make."
The man sighed, as if disappointed. "So be it."
With a simple gesture, the mist surged forward, crashing toward Elias like a wave of darkness. He barely had time to roll aside before the ground where he stood moments before was engulfed in a swirling abyss. The mist hissed upon contact with the stone, dissolving it like acid.
Elias's pulse pounded. He couldn't fight this thing head-on—not without magic of his own. He needed to be smart.
He darted toward the girl, dodging tendrils of mist that lashed at him like whips. Each one that grazed his skin left a biting cold, seeping into his bones.
As he reached her, he grabbed her wrist and pulled. "Come on!"
She hesitated, fear flashing in her eyes. "I—"
The man's voice rang through the cavern. "She cannot leave."
The mist coiled tighter around her, dragging her back. Elias yanked with all his strength, but it was like pulling against an invisible force.
Desperate, he looked at her. "Fight it! You said it was taking over, but you're still you! Resist it!"
Her eyes widened, uncertainty flickering across her face. But then something shifted. Her fear turned to determination.
With a sharp inhale, she closed her eyes and murmured something under her breath. The air around her trembled, and a faint glow radiated from within her chest. The mist recoiled slightly, hissing like a wounded beast.
The man's expression darkened. "Enough."
He raised his staff, and the cave walls shook violently. Cracks spread across the stone, and pieces of the ceiling crumbled.
Elias's heart pounded. If this place collapsed, they were dead.
The girl's glow intensified, and suddenly, the mist binding her shattered. A wave of energy burst outward, forcing the darkness to retreat.
For the first time, the man's composure cracked. He stepped back, his staff faltering. "Impossible..."
Elias seized the moment. "Run!"
He grabbed the girl's hand, and together they sprinted toward the cave's entrance. The ground trembled beneath them, the cavern crumbling around them. The man's voice echoed behind them, filled with anger.
"This is far from over, Elias."
But Elias didn't look back.
As they burst from the cave into the open air, the night sky stretched above them, stars glimmering like distant embers. They didn't stop running until they were deep into the forest, where the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine.
Finally, they collapsed against a tree, gasping for breath.
Elias turned to the girl. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, but her eyes were distant. "I... I don't know how I did that," she whispered.
Elias exhaled, trying to process everything. Whoever that man was, he had power far beyond anything Elias had ever seen. And the girl—she wasn't just cursed. She had magic of her own, something even she didn't fully understand.
One thing was certain.
The fight had only just begun.
