Chapter 14 - what was he?

Howard Stark had seen many strange things in his lifetime, super soldiers, energy weapons, and rumors of men who could defy death itself. But nothing compared to the presence of the man standing before him.

The Emperor.

There was something unnerving about him. He carried himself with the confidence of a leader yet spoke like a man who had lived through ages. His eyes, piercing, golden, and ancient told a story Howard couldn't begin to unravel.

Peggy Carter was just as wary. Her instincts, sharpened by years in espionage, screamed that this man was more than he appeared. His words were too precise, his knowledge too deep. He spoke of war, politics, and philosophy with a familiarity that no ordinary man should have.

But the real problem?

There were no records of him. Anywhere.

The Investigation Begins

The moment the Emperor disappeared into the frontlines, Howard and Peggy launched a full-scale background check. They had access to some of the best intelligence networks in the world—British, American, and even borrowed files from intercepted Hydra communications.

But every search ended the same way: nothing.

No birth records.

No military files.

No family.

No past.

It was as if the man had stepped out of *thin air.

"This isn't possible," Peggy muttered, frustrated as she flipped through the classified documents. "A man with his level of knowledge, combat experience, and influence should have some trace in history."

"Unless he doesn't want to be found," Howard added, lighting a cigar. His mind raced through the possibilities. "Or worse, he's someone we were never meant to find."

Peggy shot him a sharp look. "Are you saying he's… supernatural?"

Howard exhaled smoke, staring at the files. "I'm saying he doesn't fit into the world as we know it."

Clues in the Shadows

After weeks of digging, they found small traces, not direct evidence, but enough to raise more questions than answers.

1. Ancient War Records – In multiple declassified archives, there were vague mentions of a mysterious warrior in wars that shouldn't have had him. Descriptions varied, some called him a leader, others a guardian, but one thing remained the same: he never aged.

2. The Vanishing Cities - Howard stumbled upon whispers of lost civilizations, places where knowledge and technology flourished too fast for their time, only to mysteriously vanish. The descriptions of the figures behind them sounded eerily like the Emperor.

3. A Forgotten Name - Deep within the British Museum archives, Peggy discovered an old manuscript a journal from the 16th century. It spoke of a nameless wanderer, a man who appeared in different places throughout history, always bringing knowledge before vanishing without a trace. The final entry simply read:

"He was not like us. His eyes carried the weight of centuries. He left no footprints, but his presence shaped the world. Who was he? A king? A warrior? Or something beyond even that?"

Peggy closed the book, unsettled. "This is impossible. The same man, across different centuries?"

Howard leaned back, rubbing his chin. "It means one thing, Peg. Either we're chasing a ghost… or we've just found someone who's been rewriting history without ever being recorded."

They both sat in silence, staring at the scattered documents.

Who was this man?

And more importantly…

What was he?

The Emperor Knows

What they didn't realize was that the Emperor already knew they were investigating him.

From the moment he met them, he expected this. He could feel their curiosity, their need for answers. It was only natural—they were brilliant minds, after all.

As he stood in the shadows of a burning battlefield, watching soldiers move across the ruins of war, he closed his eyes.

"They seek to understand me."

A small smile played on his lips.

"Let them try."
