Chapter 17 - Project Ascendant

Hydra Facility – Occupied France, 1943

The Emperor stood in the shadows, watching.

Below him, a hidden Hydra laboratory buzzed with unnatural energy. Scientists in dark uniforms hurried between machines that hummed with eerie blue light. The walls pulsed with power stolen from the Tesseract, their technology decades if not centuries ahead of its time.

The Emperor narrowed his eyes. He had seen many horrors across history, but this… This was something new.

Something wrong.

His psychic senses reached out, brushing against the unnatural energies in the lab. And then he felt it.

A presence. Familiar. Twisted.

Hydra wasn't just playing with advanced technology.

They were tampering with something beyond mortal comprehension.

And he needed to know what.

The Infiltration

Moving like a shadow, the Emperor descended into the base.

The guards never saw him. Their minds dulled by his influence, their eyes sliding past him as if he were never there.

Inside the lab, rows of soldiers stood in metal restraints, their veins glowing with faint blue energy.

Hydra's scientists hovered over them, taking notes. Testing them.

And then, the Emperor saw a name on one of the files.

"Project Ascendant."

He frowned. A new super-soldier project?

But as he read further, his expression darkened.

This wasn't just about stronger soldiers.

Hydra was trying to create something… more.

Something unnatural.

Something designed to hunt beings like him.

A sharp voice broke the silence. "Who the hell are you?"

The Emperor turned.

A Hydra scientist stood frozen, eyes wide with terror. His hand hovered over an alarm.

The Emperor sighed.

"Do not move." His voice carried an unnatural weight, sinking into the man's mind like a hook.

The scientist stiffened, his breath hitching.

The Emperor stepped closer, his golden eyes glowing faintly. "Tell me what Hydra is planning."

The man's lips trembled. "We, we were ordered to create weapons. Weapons that could fight against the impossible."

The Emperor's gaze sharpened. "Impossible?"

The scientist swallowed. "People like you."

Silence.

The Emperor's hand tightened into a fist.

He had suspected. Now he knew.

Hydra knew he existed.

And they were preparing for him.

The Arrival of Captain America

Suddenly

An explosion rocked the facility.

The alarm blared through the corridors.

The Emperor turned as soldiers rushed to defend the base. Gunfire erupted. Screams followed.

And then a shield cut through the air.

It slammed into a Hydra guard, sending him flying into a wall. The Emperor's gaze snapped to the entrance.

There, standing tall amidst the chaos

Captain America.

Steve Rogers.

His uniform was torn from battle, his breath heavy, but his eyes sharp. Behind him, the Howling Commandos poured into the base, guns blazing.

For a moment, the Emperor simply watched.

Steve Rogers fought like a man possessed. He moved with purpose, every strike, every motion efficient and devastating.

And the Emperor saw it

The fire in his soul.

Steve Rogers was no ordinary soldier.

And this was the man destined to shape the future.

The Confrontation

Steve cut through Hydra's forces, but then he stopped.

His eyes locked onto the Emperor.

The room seemed to shrink.

For a moment, Steve just stared. His instincts screamed that this man this towering figure in black, with eyes like burning suns—was not normal.

And yet… he wasn't Hydra.

He was something else.

Steve slowly lowered his shield, but did not relax.

"You're not Hydra." His voice was firm. "But you're not one of us, either."

The Emperor tilted his head. "No. I am not."

A tense silence.

Steve took a step forward. "Who are you?"

The Emperor's gaze didn't waver. "A traveler."

Steve frowned. "That's not an answer."

The Emperor smirked. "No. It isn't."

Steve clenched his jaw. "You've been watching me."

The Emperor nodded. "I have."

Steve exhaled sharply. "Why?"

For a moment, the Emperor said nothing.

Then, he stepped closer.

His voice was quiet, but unshakable.

"Because you will change the world."

Steve stiffened.

The words carried weight, as if they weren't just a statement but a truth.

A prophecy.

Steve narrowed his eyes. "What do you know?"

The Emperor studied him. This was a man burdened by duty, by responsibility. A man who carried the weight of an entire war on his shoulders.

And yet, his heart burned with an unyielding fire.

The Emperor respected that.

He turned away. "More than you can imagine."

Steve's voice hardened. "That's not good enough."

The Emperor chuckled. "It never is."

Steve gritted his teeth. "So that's it? You're just going to walk away?"

The Emperor glanced back. "Not yet."

Steve tensed, gripping his shield.

The Emperor's golden eyes burned.

"One day, Captain, you will face an enemy beyond anything this world has ever known. When that day comes…"

He stepped past Steve.

"Remember that you were never meant to fight alone."

With that, he vanished into the shadows.

Leaving Steve with nothing but questions.

Aftermath

The battle ended. Hydra's base lay in ruins.

Steve stood at the entrance, staring at the burning wreckage.

Howard Stark and Peggy Carter arrived soon after, rushing to his side.

Howard was out of breath. "Tell me I didn't just see you talking to a goddamn myth."

Steve exhaled. "I don't know what I saw."

Peggy's voice was quiet. "But we all saw him."

Howard crossed his arms. "And I have a feeling we're going to be seeing a lot more of him."

Steve glanced back at the ruins. A storm was coming. He could feel it.

And somewhere in the shadows… the Emperor watched.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Because this world was not ready for what was coming next.
