As the years melted away in the timeless embrace of the hidden valley, Ling Hua grew into a spirited young woman, her command over her unique energy signature now allowing for the manifestation of intricate light constructs. Baihu's connection to the wind had evolved to the point where he could momentarily become one with the air, achieving bursts of incredible speed and near invisibility. Tian Chen continued his relentless pursuit of mastery, his Omniversal Dao providing him with an ever-expanding repertoire of skills and techniques under Lia's tutelage.
One blustery autumn afternoon, Lia led Tian Chen to a wide, open area of the valley, where the wind whipped through the tall grasses like invisible waves. The Shenmu's branches swayed rhythmically above them, its silver leaves scattering like shimmering rain in the gusts.
"Today, Tian Chen," Lia began, her voice carrying clearly over the sound of the wind, "we will focus on the art of evasion and swift movement. In a true battle, the ability to become like a fleeting shadow, untouchable and unpredictable, can often be more valuable than brute force. We will work on the "Phantom Step," a technique that emphasizes agility and the illusion of afterimages."
Tian Chen watched as Lia demonstrated the technique. She moved with incredible speed, blurring across the clearing, leaving faint, translucent afterimages in her wake, making it difficult to track her true position. It was like watching a phantom dance with the wind.
"The "Phantom Step,"" Lia explained, "draws upon the principles of wind and light. You will learn to channel your Qi to accelerate your movements to near-impossible speeds, leaving behind fleeting echoes of your form to confuse and disorient your opponents. The Omniversal Dao will allow you to incorporate elements of Baihu's innate swiftness and even the way light itself seems to flicker and disappear."
Tian Chen closed his eyes, focusing his senses on the feel of the wind whipping around him and the way the sunlight played across the leaves. He tried to emulate Baihu's effortless bursts of speed, recalling the sensation of the wind rushing past his own face. He then visualized the way light seemed to flicker in and out of existence.
Taking a deep breath, he began to move. At first, his steps were clumsy and his speed only marginally increased. But as he concentrated, focusing his Qi into his legs and incorporating his understanding of wind and light, his movements began to gain momentum. He moved faster, then faster still, until faint afterimages began to trail behind him, fleeting echoes of his passing form.
"Focus, Tian Chen," Lia instructed, her voice sharp but encouraging. "Do not just move quickly; create the illusion of movement. Let your Qi flow like the wind, unpredictable and ever-changing."
Tian Chen pushed himself harder, channeling more Qi, refining his focus. He practiced shifting directions mid-step, appearing and disappearing in different parts of the clearing, the afterimages becoming more distinct, more numerous, creating a disorienting spectacle.
Baihu watched with a keen interest, occasionally letting out a soft, encouraging rumble. Ling Hua, perched on a low-hanging branch of the Shenmu, giggled with delight as Tian Chen seemed to flicker in and out of existence.
By the end of the day, Tian Chen was exhausted but exhilarated. While he hadn't yet fully mastered the "Phantom Step," he had made significant progress. He could now move with a speed that would have been unimaginable to him just a few short years ago, leaving behind a trail of fleeting afterimages that could indeed confuse an opponent. The art of becoming like a fleeting shadow was slowly but surely becoming a reality under the watchful guidance of Lia, bringing him ever closer to his goal of invincibility within the Mortal Realm.
