Unfinished feelings

Chapter Seven: Between the Heart and the Mind

The night felt long. Amelia turned in bed, trying to push away the thoughts racing through her mind. She had told Julian "not tonight," but that didn't stop her from thinking about him.

She wondered if he was lying in bed too, staring at his phone, waiting for her to change her mind. Maybe he was already asleep, unbothered by her hesitation. The thought stung, but she ignored it. She had to stop making her world revolve around him.

By morning, she was still exhausted, but there was no time to rest. Campus was calling. She dressed quickly, grabbed her books, and left before her uncle could lecture her about wasting time.

At the cafeteria, Josephine was already seated, scrolling through her phone. She glanced up when Amelia sat down, her expression unreadable.

"You didn't call him, did you?" she asked, stirring her tea.

Amelia shook her head. "No."

Josephine gave a satisfied nod. "Good. He needs to know that he can't just walk in and out of your life whenever he feels like it."

Amelia sighed. "But what if he really means it this time?"

Josephine raised an eyebrow. "And what if he doesn't? Are you willing to go through all that pain again?"

Amelia had no answer. She wanted to believe Julian, but the fear of heartbreak was stronger.

As the day went on, she focused on her lessons, but her mind kept drifting. Even when she was surrounded by classmates, laughing at some silly joke, there was still an emptiness inside her.

That evening, just as she was getting ready for bed, her phone buzzed. Her heart jumped before she even saw the name.

Julian.

She hesitated before unlocking her phone. His message was short.

"I know I messed up before, but I don't want to lose you, Amelia."

Her fingers hovered over the screen. He always knew what to say. Always knew how to keep her tied to him.

But this time, she needed more than words.

Instead of replying, she turned off her phone and placed it face down on her pillow. If he truly wanted her, he would have to prove it.

For now, she would choose herself.
