Sophia walked out of the café feeling like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. The conversation with Ryan had left her more conflicted than ever. He seemed genuine—more genuine than he had ever been before—but was that enough?
As she made her way home, the city lights blurred around her, her thoughts spiraling. Every step felt heavier, every breath harder to take. How could she navigate this mess without breaking Leo's heart? Without breaking her own?
By the time she reached her apartment, exhaustion settled into her bones. She unlocked the door, stepping inside to find Leo curled up on the couch, watching cartoons. He turned toward her, his bright eyes lighting up.
"Mom! You're back!" He ran to her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
Sophia forced a smile, kneeling to hug him tightly. "Hey, sweetheart. Did you have fun?"
He nodded. "Yeah! Uncle Alex came by and played with me for a little while."
Her heart skipped a beat. "Alexander was here?"
"Uh-huh. He said he wanted to check on you, but you weren't home, so he stayed and played superheroes with me!" Leo beamed. "He's really cool, Mom."
A lump formed in her throat. Alexander had come to check on her, even when she hadn't asked him to.
"Did he say anything before he left?" she asked softly.
Leo thought for a moment before nodding. "He just said to tell you that he's here if you need him."
Sophia exhaled slowly, emotions swirling in her chest. Alexander always knew when she was struggling, even when she didn't say a word. He had given her space but still made sure she knew he was there.
"Alright, sweetheart, go wash up for bed," she said gently.
Leo pouted. "But I'm not tired yet."
She ruffled his hair. "Five more minutes, then bed."
As he ran off, she sank onto the couch, her mind drifting back to Alexander. She needed to see him.
—
An hour later, Sophia found herself standing in front of Alexander's penthouse, her nerves fraying with every passing second. She hesitated before knocking, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The door opened, revealing Alexander in sweatpants and a fitted t-shirt, his hair slightly tousled. His brows lifted in surprise.
"Sophia?"
She swallowed. "I—I needed to talk to you."
He stepped aside, letting her in without hesitation. The warmth of his home wrapped around her, but it was his presence that settled something inside her.
"Is everything okay?" he asked, concern flickering in his gaze.
Sophia hesitated before nodding. "Ryan wants to be in Leo's life again."
Alexander's jaw tightened, but he remained silent, waiting for her to continue.
"I don't know what to do," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want to protect Leo, but I also don't want to deny him a chance to know his father. And then there's you, and what we have, and—"
Her voice cracked, and before she could stop herself, she felt warm tears slipping down her cheeks.
Alexander was in front of her in an instant, his hands cupping her face. "Sophia, breathe."
She did, taking in a shaky breath as he wiped her tears away.
"You don't have to figure this all out tonight," he said softly. "And you don't have to do it alone."
Sophia looked up at him, her heart aching. "But what if I make the wrong choice? What if I lose everything?"
Alexander's gaze darkened with emotion. "Then I'll be right here to catch you."
Her breath hitched. His words, his presence—it was like he was offering her something she had never truly had before. Stability. Unwavering support.
Before she could stop herself, she stepped closer, her hands gripping his shirt. "I'm scared," she whispered.
Alexander leaned down, pressing his forehead to hers. "You don't have to be."
And in that moment, with the world crashing around her, she let herself believe him.
