The Voicemail (Reprise)

Daniel found Luke at 3 a.m., hunched over his laptop at the kitchen table.

"You should sleep," Daniel said.

Luke didn't look up. "College apps are due tomorrow."

Ah. Daniel grabbed two mugs—the chipped blue one for himself, the "World's Okayest Brother" one Claire had given Luke last Christmas. He set the coffee down beside him.

Luke's essay draft read: "My sister died nine months ago, and I—"

The cursor blinked.

Daniel sat beside him. "You don't have to write about her."

"I want to," Luke snapped. Then, quieter: "I just don't know how."

Daniel hesitated. Then pulled out his phone.

Lila's voice filled the kitchen: "Hey, it's me. Just checking in. Don't forget to eat something today, okay? Love you."

Luke's breath hitched.

"Start there," Daniel said.
