Chapter 3

Before Gunner could explain, I heard him say, "Darling, after I finished talking to Mom, I went to tidy up the garden a bit. I got all muddy, so I had to take a shower."

"Hmm." I nodded slightly, not pressing further, but a fleeting thought crossed my mind.

However, that thought was so absurd and outrageous that I didn't dare dwell on it!

For the next while, I continued working as usual. Perhaps Gunner's persuasion had been effective, as my mother-in-law stopped actively picking on me. She would only occasionally make passive-aggressive remarks with hidden meanings.

I couldn't be bothered to argue with her about it. The dark cloud hanging over my head urged me to urgently confirm that absurd thought.

When it was time for my prenatal check-up, I specifically asked Gunner to accompany me to the hospital. While we were waiting in line, his phone suddenly rang. Gunner looked at it and said, "Olivia, it's a call from the office. I need to take this."

"Okay," I nodded, watching Gunner walk to the side to answer the call.

The screen had shown "Winchester," and Gunner's expression seemed normal as he answered, but my sixth sense told me something wasn't right. After receiving the call, Gunner returned to my side with an apologetic expression. "Darling, there's an urgent matter at the company that needs my attention. I might not be able to stay with you."

"It's alright, you go ahead. I'll be fine on my own," I replied, appearing understanding on the surface, but my heart sank to the depths. A woman's sixth sense was growing stronger.

Gunner, however, seemed surprisingly delighted. "Great, then I'm off. Darling, remember to send me the results of your prenatal checkup, okay?"

I nodded with a smile, watching as Gunner disappeared from view. The moment he was gone, the smile vanished from my face.

I took out my phone and opened the tracking app, which displayed Gunner's location.

Ever since my suspicions were first aroused, I had been secretly keeping tabs on my husband at home, but hadn't noticed anything unusual. I had installed this tracking app on his phone some time ago, and his previous movements had all seemed normal.

But this time, I watched with my own eyes as the red dot left the hospital. However, it wasn't heading towards his office. Instead, it finally stopped at a private hospital.

The sword that had been hanging over my head finally fell. I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me, almost losing my balance.

Gunner, he had truly betrayed me!I stepped out of the hospital immediately and hailed a cab at the entrance, headed straight for that private clinic.

As soon as I entered, a gentle nurse approached, asking which department I wanted to visit and what services I needed.

I scanned the hospital lobby but didn't see any familiar faces. This hospital was huge with a full range of departments. The location shown on my phone didn't specify a floor, so I wasn't sure where to start looking.

Faced with the nurse's inquiry, I blurted out, almost possessed: "Obstetrics and Gynecology, I guess."

The nurse promptly led me to the specific floor and department. Since I was searching for someone, I didn't let her accompany me further.

My eyes scanned the couples around me, but I couldn't find Gunner anywhere. Just as I was about to try another department, a consultation room door opened, and a pair of familiar figures entered my line of sight.

Though the woman looked a bit older, her well-maintained appearance made her seem younger. She was proudly caressing her slightly protruding belly with an air of superiority. Beside her, the man not only carried her bag but also held the examination reports, carefully supporting the woman next to him with a gentle expression and eyes full of love.

Anyone who saw them would think they were a deeply in love newlywed couple.I stood frozen in place, as if struck by lightning from the heavens, my eyes fixed straight ahead at the scene before me.

For that loving couple was none other than my husband and my mother-in-law!

My husband, who had left me at my prenatal checkup with the excuse of having some business to attend to, had come to accompany my mother-in-law for her own checkup. Even if I were the biggest fool, I could now see that their relationship was far from a simple one between a stepson and his stepmother!

What stepson would accompany his stepmother to a prenatal checkup with that expression and demeanor?

In that moment, all my previous suspicions were confirmed. No wonder Gunner had been happier to hear about my mother-in-law's pregnancy than mine. No wonder he had made me quit my job while pregnant to take care of her!

The child in my mother-in-law's womb was his. These adulterers had been carrying on an affair for who knows how long!

I thought he was just a mama's boy, but he had truly made this stepmother his treasure!

The last time Gunner had pulled my mother-in-law away, claiming he was going to persuade her about something, they had been gone for so long. And when he returned, he looked so satisfied, even having changed his clothes. Now I finally understood what they had done!
