Chapter 3

She eyed me teasingly, her gaze filled with intense disgust.

"Move aside."

The pain in my fingers made my expression sour.

The restaurant was just a part-time gig; I had another job as an artist.

I couldn't let anything happen to my hands.

"Don't you want to know why Mr. Harrington suddenly proposed to me?"

Her words rooted me to the spot. I looked at her, my expression confused.

"Actually, I've known Mr. Harrington since we were kids. I never thought some bastard like you who came out of nowhere would dare to seduce Mr. Harrington and even dream of taking my place in the Gevano family."

"Why did you have to come back? You should have just disappeared from this world!"

Her expression gradually twisted, and as she finished speaking, she raised her hand to strike my face.

I caught her hand, not giving her the chance.

But she smirked, the corners of her mouth curling upward.

The next second, she violently slapped her own face with my hand.

I stared at her, eyes wide with shock.

Mr. Harrington's angry roar came from behind me.

"What are you doing?!"

"Mr. Harrington, I'm so scared."Scarlett stood there, covering her face and looking pitifully at him.

Mr. Harrington's brow was deeply furrowed as he unceremoniously pushed me aside.

"Mr. Harrington, I didn't hit her. She herself..."

"Shut up! I have eyes, I'm not blind."

His reproachful gaze was like a knife, stabbing deep into my heart.

Since when did he no longer have the patience to even hear my explanation?

I looked at his face, my eyes blurred with tears.

Seeing me like this, Mr. Harrington's expression softened slightly.

"Am I not feeding you or giving you enough to drink, that you need to work in a place like this?"

His tone was still harsh. Seeing that I remained silent, he reached out and gripped my chin.

I was forced to look up and meet his gaze.

"Speak up, why did you hit her?"

"I told you, I didn't hit anyone!"

I bit my lip, unwilling to admit to something I hadn't done.

In his eyes, I was just lying.

Mr. Harrington has always disliked liars.

So he had the restaurant fire me, and wouldn't even let them pay me my wages.

I was furious.

"On what grounds? Mr."Why are you treating me like this, Harrington?"

I screamed at the top of my lungs, but Mr. Harrington didn't even spare me a glance.

This was my lifeline, the money I was counting on to pay for my hospital bills.

Now, with just a few words from him, I wouldn't see a single penny.

I desperately clutched at his sleeve, and a look of disgust flashed across his eyes.

"Mr. Harrington, I'm so scared," Scarlett whimpered, hiding in his arms.

Mr. Harrington gently stroked her head. "Don't be afraid, I'll take you to the hospital."

With that, he scooped Scarlett up in his arms.

Stung by the scene, I hurried after them.

But I failed to notice the car coming from the side.

With a deafening crash, I was thrown to the ground, lying in a pool of blood.

Looking towards Mr. Harrington, I gazed at him pleadingly.

"Help me..."

Excruciating pain rapidly spread throughout my body, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood.

Seeing this, Mr. Harrington moved to help me, but at that moment, Scarlett fainted.

He held Scarlett, his face etched with worry."Scarlett, don't be afraid. I'll take you to the hospital right away."

When facing me, however, he was merely indifferent, as if he were dealing with someone insignificant.

"I've already called an ambulance for you. Be more careful when you walk next time."

With those words, I felt like I had plunged into an icy abyss.
