Kael's day began like any other, but this time, a simmering frustration bubbled beneath the surface. He strode into the training grounds, determined to keep up appearances. His Beta Aldric already stood in the centre, commanding a group of young wolves through drills. Aldric turned, his brow furrowing slightly as he caught sight of Kael.
"You're late, Alpha." Aldric teased, but his tone was light.
Kael shrugged it off, forcing a smirk. "No, am not, I am just letting you feel useful."
The Beta chuckled but didn't miss the stiffness in Kael's posture or the faint shadows under his Alpha's eyes. Still, he said nothing. An Alpha was not questioned lightly, not even by his Beta.
As the drills commenced, Kael's movements were fluid yet strained. Every time he swung, there was either a momentary lag or a hesitation he hadn't experienced before. Sweat trickled down his temple faster than it should have. When Aldric came at him with a mock attack, Kael dodged slower than expected.
"Alpha?" Aldric asked, stepping back with concern spreading across his face.
"I'm fine," Kael snapped, his voice sharp enough to cut through the air.
Aldric hesitated, but he nodded, sensing it wasn't the moment to press further. However, the murmurs among the younger wolves didn't escape Kael.
"Is the Alpha struggling?" one whispered, barely audible but loud enough for Kael's sharp hearing.
The words struck him harder than any blow, and anger surged within him. He swung harder during the next sequence, forcing his body to cooperate, demanding it obey him.
But his strength faltered, the ground tilted so slightly beneath his feet and Kael stumbled, catching himself just in time, but the slip didn't go unnoticed. A hush fell over the group.
Selene had been watching from the edge of the field, her eyes narrowing in quiet concern. She had noticed the change in Kael, his irritability and his rare hesitations, but seeing him struggle physically sent a wave of unease through her.
Later that evening, Selene found him in their private quarters, sitting by the large window overlooking the forest. The moonlight illuminated his face, highlighting the tension in his jaw.
"Kael," she began softly, stepping closer.
"I don't want to talk about it," he replied without turning to face her.
Selene hesitated but refused to back down. She crossed the room, sitting beside him. "You don't have to carry the weight of everything alone, that's why I'm here, I am your mate, and I love you, please share with me whatever it is.."
"I'm fine, don't worry about me my love." he insisted, his tone colder now.
"How can I not worry, obviously you're not well, do you need to see a healer?." Her voice was firm, but there was a tenderness in it that made him pause. "You've been different these past few days, please don't shut me out."
Kael turned to her, his eyes blazing with a mix of frustration and vulnerability. "What do you want me to say, Selene? That I feel weak? That something's wrong, and I don't know what it is. An Alpha doesn't admit weakness, not to his pack and definitely not to his Luna-to-be."
She reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "You don't have to be perfect, Kael. Not with me."
For a moment, his defences crumbled. He let out a shaky breath, leaning back against the window frame. "I can't afford to appear weak, the warriors already noticed and they're already whispering."
"Let them whisper," Selene said gently. "You're still their Alpha. They'll follow you through anything if you let them in."
Before Kael could respond, a howl pierced the air. It was sharp, urgent, and echoed through the night like a warning bell.
Kael was on his feet in an instant, his earlier fatigue momentarily forgotten. Selene followed close behind as they made their way to the clearing where the pack had gathered.
"What happened?" Kael demanded, his authoritative tone sinking through the chaos.
Aldric stepped forward, his expression grim. "Alpha, it's the rogue wolves. They tried to cross the eastern border."
Kael's fists clenched. "Were they dealt with?"
"We managed to fend them off, but they were organized. It wasn't random," Aldric replied.
The pack murmured among themselves, fear and uncertainty rippling through the crowd. Rogue attacks were rare, and the timing couldn't have been worse.
Selene noticed something else, a large crack was running through the pack's sacred stone, which stood at the heart of the clearing. The stone had been a symbol of unity and protection for generations. Its current state sent a chill down her spine.
"Look Alpha, what does this mean?" one of the elders whispered, staring at the stone.
Kael's voice rang out, commanding attention. "It means that we need to stay vigilant. We are stronger than any rogue pack, and we will not falter."
His words were meant to inspire, but Selene couldn't shake the unease that had settled in her chest. She glanced at Kael, noticing the slight tremor in his hands as he clenched them at his sides.
Later that night, as the pack began to disperse, Selene lingered by the stone. The crack seemed deeper now, almost as if it pulsed with an ominous energy.
"Selene," Kael called, his voice softer now.
She turned to him, her worry etched clearly on her face. "Something's wrong, Kael. That stone… it has never been like this before."
"It's just a stone," he replied, though his tone lacked conviction.
"It's more than that," she pressed. "And you know it."
Kael sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Don't worry my love, we'll figure it out soon. But for now, we need to focus on the pack."
"And on you," Selene added, stepping closer. "You're not invincible, Kael. Whatever this is, we'll face it together."
He didn't respond, but the faint flicker of gratitude in his eyes told her he heard her.
As the night deepened, the forest grew eerily quiet. No owls hooted, no crickets chirped. The stillness was unnatural, and it seeped into the hearts of the Silverclaw Pack like a creeping shadow.
Selene stood by the window of their quarters, watching the moonlight cast long, jagged shadows across the ground. She couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
Kael, lying on the bed, stared at the ceiling, his mind racing. The whispers he'd heard earlier returned, faint and fragmented, like ghostly echoes. He closed his eyes, willing them away, but they persisted.
"Kael…"
He jolted upright, his breathing was heavy.
"What is it?" Selene asked, rushing to his side.
"Nothing," he lied, shaking his head. "It's nothing."
But in his heart, he knew it was far from nothing.
