Kael lay motionless in his bed, the once vibrant spark of his wolf spirit was now dimmed. His body felt heavy as if every bone and muscle had turned to stone. Despite the days that had passed, his condition had only worsened. The wound in his side, though not visibly infected, seemed to drain more than just blood—it drained his very will to live.
He had heard the whispers of his pack. The constant murmurs behind closed doors. Is Kael still their leader? What happens if he can't rise again? What if the curse is real?
His once commanding presence had been replaced by silence by the feeling of helplessness. He couldn't even speak, let alone stand and lead his people.
His eyes fluttered open for a moment, the room around him spinning. He could hear voices, but they felt distant. The pack, his mother, and Selene—they were all a blur, their faces twisted in concern. He felt nothing but guilt, the weight of his inability to protect them, pressing down on him like a thousand pounds.
I'm a burden, Kael thought, his heart sinking. The pack is falling apart because of me. I can't even protect Selene. I should have done better.
He closed his eyes again, shutting out the world. He didn't want them to see him like this, powerless and broken. He had always been their leader, the strong one, the one they relied on. Now, it felt like everything was slipping through his fingers.
Selene sat in the small room by Kael's bedside, her hands pressed tightly against his, trying to feel some connection to him. She hadn't left his side in days, and her exhaustion was beginning to show. Her face was pale, her hair falling in messy waves around her shoulders, and her eyes, once bright and full of life, now appeared heavy with worry.
The weight of her new role in the pack was crushing her. The responsibilities of leadership, combined with Kael's declining health, were taking a toll on her body and mind. The pack was on edge, and she could feel it. Each passing day brought more whispers and more doubts. Some were supportive, but many were questioning her. Is she truly the one to lead? Is she capable of handling this burden?
She had been doing her best to keep everything together. She stepped into Kael's shoes when needed, giving orders and making decisions that would affect the entire pack. She had learned to handle the chaos, but there were moments when she felt like she was barely holding on.
That evening, after another exhausting round of managing pack disputes, Selene slipped away to the forest. She walked aimlessly. Her mind was running with thoughts. She couldn't breathe under the weight of it all. Her chest tightened, and for the first time in days, she allowed herself to break down.
Tears streamed down her face as she leaned against the tree. Her body was shaking with sobs. Why did this have to happen? Why him? Why us?
She knelt in the dirt, her sobs muffled by the sounds of the wind. She felt so small, so insignificant. She had never imagined she would be faced with such a burden, with a responsibility so heavy. Kael's condition… the curse… the pack's unrest… it was all too much.
But then, as the tears slowed and the moonlight filtered through the branches, she wiped her face and stood up. Her heart was still heavy, but something deep within her stirred. Kael needed her, and the pack needed her, too.
I can't break now, she thought, her voice a whisper in the night. I promised him I would stay strong. I promised them all I would never falter.
She took a deep breath, wiping away the last of her tears. She could do this. She had to for Kael and for the pack.
The following days were the hardest yet. The pack was growing restless. What had once been a well-knit group was now divided, with old rivalries resurfacing and fears beginning to tear them apart.
Whispers filled the air at every turn. "Can she really lead us? She's just a female. What does she know about being in charge?"
"She's not Kael. She'll never be Kael."
"There's no way this curse won't destroy us. I can feel it. We're doomed."
Selene walked through the camp. Her steps were firm despite the tension in the air. She knew the murmurs were about her, about the curse, and about her leadership. The weight of it pressed down on her shoulders like a thousand stones. But she couldn't show weakness.
"Selene," the Beta, Aldric, approached her with a conflicted expression. "We need to talk."
She nodded, motioning for him to follow. They stepped away from the others, their voices low as the pack members continued to watch.
"Aldric what's happening?" she asked, her voice steady but tired.
"The pack is losing faith," Aldric admitted. "Some of the older wolves are starting to question everything. They're afraid the curse is real, and they think you won't be able to hold this pack together."
Selene's heart sank, but she kept her composure. "They'll have to trust me. There's no choice."
"You can't make them trust you by force," Aldric warned. "You need to show them you can lead, and if you can't—" He stopped himself, not wanting to finish the sentence.
Selene's eyes flashed with determination. "I will lead. No matter what, I won't let them tear us apart."
Aldric hesitated before speaking again. "But there's something else. There's talk of an uprising—some members are even suggesting they seek another leader, one who isn't cursed. Someone with power, someone they can believe in."
The words hit her like a blow to the chest, but she didn't let them show. She had made her decision, and she had to keep going.
"I'll prove them wrong," she said firmly, the fire in her eyes burning brighter than ever. "I'll hold us together."
That night, after another long day of managing the pack, Selene couldn't sleep. She sat in the room Kael once shared with her, her fingers tracing the edges of the bed. The silence was deafening, the weight of the pack's fear and her responsibilities pressing down on her.
Suddenly, a loud knock on the door broke the silence.
"Selene?" It was Lila's voice, soft but urgent.
Selene stood, her heart racing. "What is it, Lila?"
Lila entered, her face pale, eyes wide. "It's the pack… they're gathered in the clearing. They want to speak with you."
Selene's stomach dropped. "What now?"
"They're demanding answers," Lila said, her voice trembling. "They want to know what's going to happen to Kael. Some are questioning your leadership."
Selene's heart raced, but she squared her shoulders and took a deep breath. "I'll handle it."
Lila grabbed her arm. "Be careful, Selene. They're angry, and fear makes people do things they wouldn't normally do."
"I know," Selene replied softly. "But I can't let them tear us apart. I won't."
With one last glance at Lila, Selene made her way to the clearing.
As she approached, the pack members fell silent. Their eyes followed her; some were filled with scepticism, while others were with open anger.
One of the older warriors, Marcellus, stepped forward. "Selene," he said, his voice low. "We need to know the truth. Is Kael really coming back? Or should we prepare for the worst?"
Selene's heart tightened in her chest. She could feel the fear radiating from them. She took a deep breath, stepping forward to meet their eyes.
"Kael will return," she said, her voice strong, despite the uncertainty inside her. "I won't let this pack fall, I will lead us. But I need your faith. We need to stand together now more than ever."
But as she spoke, she saw the doubt in their eyes, the uncertainty. And then, just as she was about to speak again, a voice broke through the crowd.
"There's no hope left. The curse has already claimed him."
The voice came from the shadows, and as the figure stepped forward, Selene's heart skipped a beat. She knew exactly who it was.
And with that, the pack's fate hung in the balance.
The figure in the shadows was none other than Kael's uncle, Darius. He was a powerful and well-respected member of the pack and one who had always been loyal to Kael. But now, his eyes were filled with something far darker.
"I've seen what's happening," Darius continued with a cold voice. "The pack is unravelling. It's only a matter of time before the curse takes us all. And if Kael's not fit to lead… someone else will have to."
Selene's breath caught in her throat, the tension thickening with every word.
"Don't even think about it," she warned, her voice shaking with barely contained anger. "Kael will lead us again. I won't let you tear us apart."
Darius smiled, a cold, calculating look in his eyes. "You can try, Selene. But it's already too late."
And with those words, everything began to unravel. The future of the pack was uncertain, and Selene had no idea just how far Darius was willing to go to seize control.
