Selene sat beside Kael's bed, the room dimly lit by a single candle. She gently brushed a strand of hair from his forehead, her heart aching at his continued stillness. The weight of the day's events pressed heavily upon her.
As she prepared for bed, Aeliana's words echoed in her mind: "The answers will reveal themselves to you." Earlier that day, the elderly woman had advised her, "Pay attention to your dreams; you will get the answers you seek."
Clutching the anklet Aeliana had given her, Selene whispered, "Please, guide me." She placed the anklet on her nightstand and lay down, exhaustion pulling her into a deep sleep.
Darkness enveloped her. A cold and suffocating darkness. Selene found herself standing in a vast, empty void. The silence was deafening.
Suddenly, a faint whisper broke the stillness.
"Selene..."
She turned, searching for the source. In the distance, she saw Kael, chained and surrounded by shadows.
"Kael!" she screamed, running towards him.
But an invisible barrier stopped her, no matter how hard she pounded against it, she couldn't reach him.
"Help me" Kael's voice echoed, filled with despair.
The shadows around him began to close in, their eyes glowing with malice.
"No!" Selene cried, tears streaming down her face. "I can't lose you!"
The shadows lunged at Kael, and he let out a blood-curdling scream.
Selene jolted awake, drenched in sweat, her heart was racing.
The first light of dawn shone its reflection through the window as Selene sat up, trying to steady her breathing. A soft knock sounded at the door.
"Selene?" Liora's voice called gently.
"Come in," Selene replied, her voice trembling.
Liora and Lila entered, their faces etched with concern.
"We heard you scream," Lila said, sitting beside her. "Are you okay?"
Selene nodded, wiping her tears. "I had a nightmare. It felt so real."
"Tell us," Liora urged, taking her hand.
Selene recounted the dreams with a shaky voice. "Kael was trapped, surrounded by shadows. I tried to reach him, but something stopped me."
Lila frowned. "Do you think it means something?"
"Aeliana said to pay attention to my dreams," Selene murmured. "But I don't understand."
Liora squeezed her hand. "Maybe we should speak with her again."
Before Selene could respond, a familiar voice echoed through the room.
"The answer lies inside of you. They will become clearer as daylight approaches. Remember to keep your bond with Kael strong, and you must never defile yourself with another man."
They turned to see Aeliana standing by the window, her eyes piercing.
"Aeliana!" Selene exclaimed. "How did you—"
But before she could finish, Aeliana vanished, leaving only the faintest trace of her presence.
The three women sat in stunned silence, the weight of Aeliana's words pressing upon them.
"What does she mean?" Lila whispered.
Selene took a deep breath, determination hardening her features. "I don't know, but I will find out for Kael and for the pack."
As the first rays of sunlight bathed the room, Selene felt a renewed sense of purpose. The path ahead was uncertain, but she knew one thing: she would not rest until Kael was free from the darkness that held him.
In the days that followed, Selene devoted herself to finding a way to save Kael. She spent hours consulting ancient texts, seeking guidance from elders, and meditating in hopes of uncovering a solution. Her focus was unwavering, but it came at a cost.
Darius was always there among the pack members, though. Along with sharing meals with families and listening to their worries with real attention, he trained with the fighters. Many were drawn to him because of his lively personality and helping attitude.
One afternoon, a group of young wolves gathered near the training grounds, discussing the recent rogue attacks.
"Do you think we'll be safe if they come again?" a young wolf named Fenrir asked, his voice tinged with worry.
Before anyone could respond, Darius approached, his demeanour was confident and reassuring.
"Safety is our top priority," Darius said, placing a hand on Fenrir's shoulder. "I've been working on new strategies to strengthen our defences. Together, we'll ensure the pack remains secure."
Fenrir's eyes brightened. "Thank you, Darius. It's comforting to know you're looking out for us."
Nearby, Liora observed the interaction, her brow furrowing in concern. She noticed that more pack members were seeking Darius's counsel, often bypassing Selene entirely. The respect and authority that once belonged to her son and his Luna seemed to be shifting toward Darius.
Selene sat in the pack's library, surrounded by scrolls and ancient books. The weight of her responsibilities pressed heavily upon her. She knew the pack needed strong leadership, but her heart was consumed with finding a way to bring Kael back.
Lila entered quietly, sensing her friend's distress.
"Selene, you've been in here for hours. Have you found anything?" Lila asked gently.
Selene sighed, rubbing her temples. "Nothing concrete. Every lead seems to end in ambiguity. I feel like I'm failing him, Lila."
Lila sat beside her, offering a comforting presence. "You're doing everything you can. The pack sees your dedication."
Selene shook her head. "Do they? Or do they see me neglecting my duties as Luna?"
Lila hesitated before speaking. "I've heard whispers... some believe Darius is better suited to lead during this time."
A pang of guilt struck Selene. "Perhaps they're right. I can't be everywhere at once. Maybe it's best if Darius handles the pack's affairs while I focus on Kael."
Lila frowned. "Are you sure that's wise? Darius has his own ambitions."
Selene looked down, conflicted. "I don't seem to have much of a choice, I must save Kael."
That evening, after a long day of research and consultations, Selene decided to take a warm bath to soothe her weary body and mind. She filled the tub with hot water, adding fragrant herbs to help her relax.
As she soaked, her thoughts drifted to Kael and the unsettling changes within the pack. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss, but exhaustion clouded her judgment.
After her bath, Selene dried herself and threw the towel onto the bed. Confident that her door was locked and seeking a moment of solitude, she let her guard down. She sat completely naked on her bed as she applied oil to her skin, the soothing scent calming her nerves.
Suddenly, the door burst open, Selene gasped, reaching for her towel; she hurriedly tied it around her chest, though in her desperation, she couldn't completely cover up; she clutched the towel to her chest as Darius entered the room, closing the door behind him.
"Darius! What are you doing here?" she demanded, her voice a mix of anger and fear. "You should have knocked! Why are you even in my room?"
Darius smiled, his eyes glinting with a predatory gleam. "Forgive me, my darling Luna. I couldn't stay away any longer."
Selene backed away, her heart was racing, and she was taking steps backwards. "Stay away from me. This is inappropriate."
He took a step closer, his gaze never leaving hers. "I've admired you for a long time, Selene. Your strength, your beauty... it's intoxicating."
She pressed herself against the wall, clutching her towel tightly. "This is wrong, Darius. Kael is your nephew, and I'm his mate."
Darius chuckled softly. "Kael is as good as dead. The pack needs strong leaders, and together, we could be unstoppable."
Selene's eyes widened in horror. "You can't mean that. Kael will recover, and he'll lead the pack again."
He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You're naive if you believe that. The pack already looks to me for guidance. Join me, and we can rule together."
He leaned in closer and kissed her bare shoulders, licking her neck with his tongue.
Selene slapped his hand away, her voice trembling with rage. "I will never betray Kael."
Darius's expression darkened; he leaned closer enough that he could hear her heartbeat and grabbed her waist with his right hand. "You have seven days to reconsider. If you refuse, I will take what I want by force; you can't imagine what I will do to this sexy body of yours." He said, looking down at her chest. "And trust me, you'll regret defying me."
With that, he turned and left the room, leaving Selene trembling with fear and disgust.
Selene sank to the floor, her mind racing. She had underestimated Darius's ambition and depravity. The realization that she had allowed him to gain so much power while she focused solely on Kael filled her with dread.
As the weight of his threat settled upon her, Selene knew she had to act quickly. The safety of the pack, and her own, depended on it.
