Eyes of the Selectors

Chapter 5-

Aarav wiped the sweat from his forehead as he walked back to the dugout. His heart was still pounding from the last few shots, but he kept his expression calm. He had done his job. Now, it was time to see if it was enough.

The selectors sat in their elevated stand, murmuring among themselves. Some nodded, others remained impassive. Aarav couldn't hear what they were saying, but he knew one thing—they had noticed him.

His teammates clapped him on the back. Even Rishi, who had been nervous just an hour ago, looked relieved. "You saved us, man," he said, his voice still shaky.

Aarav shook his head. "We saved each other."

The Break Before the Storm

As the other team prepared to bat, Aarav sat on the bench, watching their openers warm up. They were strong, confident hitters. If his team didn't bowl well, the 92 runs they had fought for wouldn't be enough.

"Who are the main bowlers?" Aarav asked.

A tall, lanky boy with sharp features, Ravi, stretched his arms. "I'll open. Fast bowler."

A stocky, serious-looking boy, Manish, nodded. "I bowl spin in the middle overs."

Aarav looked around. "Anyone else?"

Silence. That wasn't a good sign.

"We don't have a death-over specialist," Manish admitted.

Aarav frowned. That meant their final overs could be disastrous if they didn't build enough pressure early on.

Before he could think further, the umpires called for the fielding team. It was time.

The Chase Begins

Ravi sprinted in for the first ball. It was fast, swinging in late, and hit the batsman's pads. A loud appeal erupted.

The umpire shook his head. Not out.

The next ball was short, and the batsman pulled it for four.

Aarav clenched his jaw. This wasn't going to be easy.

By the third over, the opposition had already reached 28/0. They were attacking aggressively, knowing a small target meant they had time to take risks.

Aarav stepped forward. "Ravi, slow it down. They're using your pace."

Ravi grunted but nodded. He bowled the next one slightly fuller, taking away the batsman's space. A mistimed shot—straight to mid-on!

First wicket down.

The energy in the field shifted.

Manish came in for the sixth over. His first ball gripped the surface, turning sharply. The batsman misread it completely and was bowled.

Two down.

The pressure was building. The scoreboard now read 45/2 in 7 overs. The match was hanging in the balance.

Aarav knew it was time to take a risk.

A Bold Move

Between overs, he walked up to the captain. "Let me bowl the ninth."

The captain raised an eyebrow. "You're not a regular bowler."

Aarav met his gaze. "We need to break their momentum. Trust me."

After a pause, the captain nodded.

Aarav took the ball. He wasn't the fastest. He wasn't the trickiest. But he had something else—strategy.

He noticed the batsman was stepping out early, trying to dominate the spinners. Aarav adjusted his grip and bowled a slower, wider delivery.

The batsman charged forward—and missed. The wicketkeeper whipped off the bails.

Stumped!

The dugout erupted. Three wickets down.

Aarav turned back to his mark, gripping the ball tighter. He wasn't just fighting to win this match.

He was proving he belonged here.
