Chapter 12: Into the Abyss
Amara sat in silence as Jide left the room, his expression grim. The weight of his words had settled in her chest like a stone, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the image of him—that man—who had been a part of a world so dark, so dangerous, that even her sharpest instincts told her she should run.
But she didn't.
She couldn't.
A part of her knew she was as much a prisoner as Jide now. She had stepped into his world, into his web, and every thread pulled tighter with each passing moment.
She tried to ignore the gnawing fear and instead focused on the thing that had always driven her—logic. Jide's past was complicated. But so was her present. This wasn't just about him anymore; this was about survival.
The sound of a door slamming brought her back to the present. She stood up, quickly smoothing her clothes. Her mind raced. Could Jide truly handle whatever was coming?
Suddenly, Jide reappeared in the doorway, his face pale.
"It's worse than I thought," he said, his voice tight. "Tunde wasn't just a messenger. He's here to bring me back."
Amara's stomach dropped. "Back to what?"
"To the job."
She shook her head. "No. You said you were out."
"I thought I was. But they're pulling me back in."
A cold, furious wave swept over her. She had warned him about the risks—about how dangerous it was for her to be so deeply involved with someone like him. But he had insisted, pushing her fears aside. Now, here they were, standing at the edge of a cliff.
"I'm not going back to that world, Amara," Jide said quietly, his eyes dark with resolve. "But they'll make sure I do unless I pay the price."
Amara frowned. "How do we stop this?"
Jide paused, his gaze heavy with something unspoken. "There's only one way."
"What's that?"
"We fight back."
Her heart skipped a beat. "And you're sure we can?"
"We don't have a choice."
He moved closer to her, his hands gently cupping her face, his gaze softening despite the tension in his features. "But I won't let them hurt you, Amara. I won't let them take you from me."
Amara's breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, she almost believed him. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something that scared her—the desperation in his gaze.
This wasn't just about protecting her. It was about him—the man who had once lived in a world of shadows, who had been a part of things that should have never existed, and now had to face the consequences.
"Whatever happens," Jide said, his voice thick with emotion, "we do this together."
She nodded, a shiver running through her as she realized just how far they had both fallen into this dangerous game.
And as they stepped into the unknown, Ama
ra finally understood—there was no turning back now.
