059: Bubble Frog's First Victory!!
[Fletchling]
Level: LV.5
Type: Normal, Flying
Nature: Bold
Ability: Big Pecks
Potential: C (Standard)
Known Moves (Proficiency Levels):
Proficient: Peck, Growl
Unfamiliar: Quick Attack
Ash activated the system scan, locking onto Gary's Pokémon across the field.
Just as he had expected, the Pokémon assigned to students for the summer camp were uniformly at Level 5. The battle was designed to test tactics and compatibility, not raw power.
Fletchling shared the same three beginner-level skills as Froakie Growl, Pound (Peck in Fletchling's case), and Quick Attack. The key difference was that Ash's Froakie had self-trained its Pound and Bubble to proficient level, enhancing both power and speed of execution.
In comparison, Gary's Fletchling had only two moves at the proficient level, with Quick Attack still classified as unfamiliar, meaning it was unreliable in fast-paced combat.
However, the aerial mobility of Fletchling gave it an environmental advantage. Ash knew better than to underestimate a Flying-type Pokémon's mobility, especially with Froakie still grounded.
As Ash finished analyzing Fletchling's stats via the system scan, a staff member standing on the dam's edge raised a flag and shouted decisively, "Battle between Student Gary and Student Ash Begin!!"
"Fletchling, take to the skies and maintain altitude above Froakie!" Gary called out immediately, initiating the first move.
"Chirp!!" With swift acceleration, Fletchling launched itself skyward like a released arrow, taking position in the open air above the water.
Spectators among the summer camp students buzzed with excitement. Gary's precise command and Fletchling's immediate reaction looked impressive to the untrained eye.
To the right of the dam, Ash observed Gary's preemptive tactic with calm, analytical focus. He'd already identified a key weakness: Gary's Fletchling did not possess any long-range attacks.
Ash raised his hand and issued a simple command: "Froakie, use Growl."
"Croaaak…" Crouched like a predator about to strike, Froakie lifted its head and let out a strong croak toward the hovering Fletchling.
Growl, though a basic move, still had practical application at this stage. It mildly reduced the target's Attack stat and, in some cases, disrupted concentration through psychological pressure.
Fletchling's aerial bravado was momentarily tempered.
On the opposite end, Gary, noting Ash's passive play and apparent lack of offensive initiative, scoffed and went on the offensive.
"Fletchling, hit it with Quick Attack!"
"Chirp!" In an instant, Fletchling burst forward from the air, its feathers glowing faintly with the telltale streak of white energy that enveloped its form like a comet.
The observers gasped audibly. Some of the students even jumped to their feet, overwhelmed by the speed and precision of the aerial dive.
But Ash remained composed. "Froakie, form a bubble barrier. Block it with your Frubbles."
"Croak!!" Froakie sprang into action. The white foam-like frubbles around its neck expanded outward like a burst pillow, forming a semi-transparent bubble wall in front of it.
Right then, Fletchling struck
Pffft!!
Rather than a crash or impact, the hit sounded like a fist sinking into a soft pillow. Fletchling's velocity was immediately nullified as it plunged straight into the sticky frubbles, its momentum arrested.
"Fletchling…?" Gary blinked in shock, his confident posture faltering.
Ash's eyes sharpened as he extended a single finger forward. This was the opening he'd been waiting for.
"Froakie, now! Use Pound!"
"Croak!" Hiding behind its defensive foam wall, Froakie lashed out. One arm shot forward, grabbing Fletchling by the wing, and the other arm raised up high before swinging downward in a heavy strike.
WHAM!
"Chirp!!" Fletchling let out a cry before spinning through the air and tumbling to the ground, its eyes spiraling into unconsciousness.
The first win of the camp Ash's Froakie had just secured its first official victory.
"Fletchling has lost the ability to battle. The winner of this match is Ash's Froakie!" The guest referee an assistant from Professor Oak's research team temporarily officiating the camp matches raised his arm and announced the result in a loud and clear voice.
"Wow~ That was incredible."
"It looked like Fletchling had the upper hand with that Quick Attack from the skies, but Froakie turned it around in a flash. That counter was insane!"
"This Froakie is way too strong!"
"It's not just Froakie. All the Pokémon distributed for the summer camp are the same level LV.5 and have balanced move pools. This win came down to the Trainer's strategy and timing."
"Exactly. Fletchling, being part Flying-type, should've had a natural edge with aerial mobility. But no one expected Froakie to weaponize its frubbles like that!"
"This student named Ash is on a different level."
At the conclusion of the battle, Ash and Froakie had cleverly exploited the frubbles its signature bubble-like foam that wraps around its neck—to counter Gary's Fletchling, immobilizing it mid-attack and striking decisively with a close-range Pound. The victory was clean and decisive.
After the referee confirmed the outcome, the surrounding summer camp students buzzed with conversation and admiration. But while the crowd analyzed the tactical exchange, Gary stood silently, still stunned at how swiftly his Fletchling had been taken down.
[Ding! Congratulations to the host Fletchling (LV.5) defeated. Experience Points +50]
[Froakie meets experience requirements. Froakie has leveled up… Current Level: LV.6]
"Huh? Froakie leveled up?" Ash was momentarily surprised by the system's notification, but then his surprise turned to excitement as he quickly processed the development.
Despite the "Mega Trainer System" being severely damaged, Ash still retained access to three core functions. Until now, he had experienced the modules for "Skill Duplication" and "Skill Proficiency." But this was the first time he activated the third module "Rapid Level-Up."
Note: The Rapid Level-Up function allows Pokémon to gain experience by defeating opponents and instantly apply level gains, bypassing traditional training limitations.
Unlike Skill Duplication, which had stricter activation conditions, this upgrade module was straightforward and generous. As long as battles were won even against repeatedly encountered opponents experience points would accumulate, and levels would rise accordingly.
"With the system's 'Rapid Level-Up' module in play, training Pokémon and improving team strength is going to be so much easier," Ash thought, deeply satisfied by the result.
Returning his gaze to Froakie still on the battlefield, Ash smiled and didn't hesitate to heap praise on his partner: "Froakie, you were amazing out there!"
"Quack~!" Froakie beamed with joy. Having won its first formal battle and received heartfelt praise from its Trainer, it gave a cheerful croak, its eyes narrowing into happy crescents.
