Diamonds and Regrets

The morning after the gala buzzed with headlines and half-truths.

Ava walked into the Cole Dynamics lobby, her heels clicking against the marble, head held high despite the storm churning inside her. The night's events lingered like perfume—haunting and impossible to shake.

She'd danced with Ethan. Been seen. And worse… felt.

Now, the whispers had begun. Not just in corners of the office, but in the way assistants exchanged glances, and how board members looked at her as if she were a risk, not a resource.

She headed straight to the executive floor.

But before she reached her desk, Victoria intercepted her—flawless in a designer suit, lips curved like she knew something Ava didn't.

"Big night, wasn't it?" she said smoothly. "You do clean up nicely… though some of us are used to that kind of spotlight."

Ava's tone was cool. "If you're looking for a thank-you for last night's drama, keep walking."

Victoria laughed lightly. "Oh no, darling. That wasn't even the main event."

She stepped aside, motioning toward the glass-walled boardroom.

Inside stood Ethan.

And next to him—his mother, Claudia.

Between them sat a small black box. Velvet. Closed.

Ava's breath hitched.

She couldn't move. Couldn't breathe.

Then Claudia turned—smiling, serene—and waved Ava in like a guest at a party she hadn't been invited to.

Ava stepped into the boardroom. The air felt different, heavier. Like the walls were listening.

"We were just discussing some new partnership strategies," Claudia said, her voice all grace and dagger. "Ethan's agreed to make some public-facing commitments… to restore confidence in the leadership dynamic."

Ava frowned. "What kind of commitments?"

Ethan opened his mouth, but Claudia beat him to it.

"An engagement," she said, sweet and lethal. "One that aligns with our brand. Ethan and Victoria will be announcing it by the end of the quarter."

Silence.

Ava's chest caved in just slightly. "You're getting engaged?"

Ethan's jaw tightened. "It's not—"

Claudia cut him off. "The board believes it's the right move. Stability. Legacy. Optics."

Victoria flashed a ring box smile. "It's all very… strategic."

Ava's voice was barely above a whisper. "So am I a liability now?"

Claudia stepped forward, close enough that only Ava could hear. "You always were, dear. You just forgot your place."

And then she turned away.

Ava left without a word.

But her silence wasn't surrender—it was survival.

And in her heart, something shifted. She would not be a pawn in their game. Not again.
