Alex woke up early the next day he prepared for the awakening ceremony. There were instances where humans were able to unlock their skills in a crisis, but after advancement in bio technology and awakening of alchemist hunters, awakening potions were developed. The potions helped the humans to awaken their skills at the age of 18 to 20.
Although the first humans unlocked their skills at the time of need like being attacked by a monster or on the verge of death, today it was as easy as drinking water to unlock a skill if you were lucky that is.
Alex wore his uniform and stood in the parade ground with others who were current batch of eligible students chosen to drink the awakening potion.
He had to clear an exam for both theory and physical in order to be selected for this moment. The principal of the school soon arrived on the ground in front of school where the whole school was gathered. There were stadiums built specifically for sports and other activities where the awakening ceremony would take place.
" My dead students, today is the most important day of your life. It's either make it or break it. Some of you would become the pillars of humanity in the future... "
It was the standard speech that Alex had heard many times. The only difference was that he was now standing among those that were undergoing the awakening. He took a look around as he saw several familiar people there. Ron was sitting in audience wearing a t-shirt cheering Patricia Iron heart.
Professor Ainsley was sitting just few seats away confused at the display. There was Patricia Iron heart standing among the first line looking like a proper military women. She was top of the class in Theoretical test.
There was Eric Lasner standing in the front like whom Alex recognized. Son of prominent military commander and top of the class in physical test.
There were few of his class mates there with him too as he looked at the principal just closing his speech.
" This is the awakening potion. It's also called the nectar of the gods. You would probably never see this again in your life so cherish this moment and hope for the best! " Principal lifted up a glass of wine as he cheered the students as it was a custom of the school.
Principal gulped down the glass of wine as the students gulped down the glass of awakening potion. Alex too gulped down his own potion as he finished the glass in one go. It was so bitter that he almost felt like throwing up. Fortunately, he was prepared for the taste so he was able to force the last bit down his throat without much struggle.
Soon he stopped focusing on the outside and closed his eyes as concentrated on what was happening on the inside of his body.
It was said that you would be able to see a floating panel when your skill unlock was successful. Alex could feel a cool sensation spreading through his body as he opened his eyes and the magical floating screen was there. His eyes shone with joy as he looked at the panel.
Name - Alex Heracles
Race - Demihuman
Level - 0
Class - None
Skill - (D) Immolate
(D) Immolate - you are controller of flames, Consume stamina to immolate a target, makes the user immune to flames. One target at a time. Breaking the line of sight stops the new flames from being ignited on the target.
Alex was overjoyed after reading the status. This was the best he could ask for. Maybe if he did that candle experiment, his skill would be more than D rank but by the description, it looked like he had awakened an OP skill.
Soon he could hear the principal's voice again. " I know that those of you who have successfully unlocked their skills are eager to try out their skills but first I would request those of you who have not unlocked the skills to please vacate the area. You can sit in the audience and observe if you want. Life will go on and not unlocking a skill is not the end of the world.
Maybe you can do much better in military service and later in civil life. "
The audience clapped for those who failed to unlock the skills to boost their morals as majority of the students left the area, some with new determination and some with wet eyes.
The fellow students welcomed them with open arms in the audience as Alex saw that there were only nine people left on the ground including him. The toppers were obviously there, there were two twin brothers who were also sons of a well known dead hunter. He saw a skinny girl with dark circles around her eyes, a fat guy and a Chinese guy with a dragon tattoo on his neck. Those were the once that Alex didn't know, the last one was Sylvia Stromberg. An average student of his class that was similar to him in terms of grades.
Alex finally focused back on the panel, something stood out from the panel that made him frown. The principal gave a congratulatory speech but Alex's focus was on a single world in his panel.
Race - Demihuman.
He was confused at what this meant? There were cases where monsters had infiltrated the human population. Some of them wanted to live as humans and some of them didn't have such good intention.
He realizes that maybe his one of his parents were either monster or had a monster bloodline. Usually, this was a good thing as those with monster bloodline were stronger than the rest but just finding this out suddenly was quite a shock for him.
He quickly calmed down as he finally focuses back at the principal.
" now please, one by one, you all can try out your skills if you want. " As soon as principal sad that, both Eric and Patricia left the ground and sat down on the bench not far away, the twins also chose to opt out of showing off their skills.
The far guy chose to go first. Alex and others vacated the ground for him.
" Hi, my name is Riley Erenmore and my skill is called 'Mega hands'. "
"Okay riley, now to use the skill, you just have to think about it, it's like an instinct. So just go for it! " The principal cheered as the audience clapped for Riley.
Soon, Riley rubbed his hands as he got into position, suddenly his hands started bloating as they grew to the size of football, it didn't stop there and they continued to grow. His hands grew to the size of sandbags as they stopped growing.
Riley was able to lift them with ease as he slapped the ground with his huge hands. He looked like Hellboy but with both hands the size of pillars. His slap on the ground blew dust all around as he soon stopped using his skill and his hands slowly deflated.
The audience roared and cheered as Alex saw Ron showing him thumbs up from his seat. Ron was happy that his best friend was able to unlock the skill and that he would be spared from all the crying that would have come his way if Alex was unable to unlock his skill.
