Anna glanced out the car window, her fingers trembling slightly as she traced the cold glass. The city’s lights grew sparse, replaced by the dense shadows of looming trees. Something wasn’t right.
She turned to Jaden, who sat beside her, his expression as impassive as ever. The car’s dim lighting cast shadows across his sharp features, but there was no mistaking the hardness in his jaw.
“Jaden,” she began cautiously, her voice breaking the heavy silence. “Where exactly are we going?”
He didn’t look at her, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. “Somewhere safe,” he replied, his tone clipped.
“Safe?” Anna repeated, her brows furrowing. “What does that even mean? You said we were going to the hospital.”
Jaden sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as if she were exhausting him. “Plans change, Anna. The hospital isn’t secure enough. There are too many risks.”
