Chapter -6 Chaos,chalk and chemistry

Pov:Max

After everything with Mike—the messages, the meeting, and the ache I tucked under my pillow—I needed normal. No drama. No hidden feelings. Just... normal.

Turns out, normal doesn't exist in our classroom.

Especially not when Kitty's in one of her moods.

It all started with our Chemistry professor trying to explain something about molecular orbitals, but his handwriting on the board looked more like a doctor's prescription written during an earthquake.

Kitty squinted. "Is that a p-orbital or a pigeon?"

I choked on my laughter. "Shhh!"

She smirked. "Be serious. We might die without knowing how to bond properly."

"Story of my life," I mumbled.

Then it escalated. Fast.

Our professor asked a question—some complicated, brain-frying thing about hybridization. The class went silent. No hands raised.

Except Kitty's.

She stood up, cleared her throat dramatically, and said, "Sir, based on my intense inner calculations… the answer is definitely… 42."

The whole class burst out laughing.

Even the professor smiled (barely). "Miss Kitty, are you trying to be smart or just sarcastic?"

"Both," she said proudly. "It's called multitasking, sir."

I swear I almost fell out of my chair. She sat down next to me like nothing happened.

"Why are you like this?" I asked between giggles.

"Because someone's got to be the entertainment in this sad academic movie," she said, twirling her pen.

By the end of the class, Kitty had drawn an actual orbital diagram that looked suspiciously like a heart and passed it to me with a wink.

"You and your mysterious senior," she whispered.

And just like that, the ache came rushing back—but I laughed anyway.

Because sometimes, the best way to carry a heavy heart…

is to let it laugh a little.

Kitty gasped.

"REN?!"

The world paused.

Ren's lips curved into a small smile. "Hey, idiot."

Kitty shot up, ran to her, and hugged her so tight I thought they might both fall over.

"You said you couldn't come until next week!"

"Plans changed," Ren said quietly. "I needed to get away."

Kitty's expression softened. "I heard about your uncle... I'm so sorry."

Ren nodded. There was sadness in her eyes—but strength, too.

They sat down beside me. Kitty pulled Ren close and looked at me.

"Max, this is Ren—my partner-in-crime since we were five."

I smiled. "Hi. I've heard… so many stories."

Ren chuckled. "Oh god. All lies, I swear."

And just like that, something shifted. The chaos of the class faded into the background.

Three girls. Three different stories. But something about that moment felt... whole.

Like maybe, just maybe, I was finding a little piece of home here
