Chapter Nineteen – Savannah’s Curiosity

sneakers. The breeze tugged at Savannah's curls, but she didn't seem to notice—her thoughts were still back at school. Or more specifically, on one person.

"So…" Savannah began, glancing sideways at Anna, a mischievous spark in her eye. "Your mystery boy has a name."

Anna arched a brow, but didn't respond.

"Ryan," Savannah continued, as if savoring the syllables. "Kind of fits, doesn't it? Mysterious, brooding, barely talks to anyone."

Anna rolled her eyes. "You talked to him, didn't you?"

"Technically, yes. Briefly," Savannah said, smiling. "I may have… you know, flirted. Just a little."

Anna smirked, brushing her hair behind her ear. "And?"

Savannah let out a soft sigh, hugging her books to her chest. "He didn't flirt back. But he didn't walk away either. That counts for something, right?"

Anna laughed under her breath. "Sounds like him."

"Ugh, it's so frustrating!" Savannah exclaimed, half-laughing. "He's like… I don't know, a locked diary or something. But there's something about him, Anna. Something I can't quite figure out."

They walked in silence for a moment, just the sound of sneakers on pavement and the distant rustle of wind in the trees.

"You really like him?" Anna asked, quieter this time.

Savannah tilted her head, considering. "I don't know. I mean, I barely know him. But there's something about the way he looks at things. Like he sees more than he lets on. Like he's been through stuff."

Anna glanced over, her expression unreadable.

Savannah smiled again, this time softer. "I think he's the kind of person you don't get to know by asking questions. You just… wait, and eventually, he lets you in."

"Or not," Anna murmured.

Savannah looked at her, catching something in her tone. "You okay?"

Anna nodded quickly. "Yeah. Just… be careful, okay?"

Savannah bumped her shoulder gently. "I will. I'm not trying to fall head over heels. Just trying to figure out the new kid. That's all."

But deep down, she wasn't so sure. There was something about Ryan that made her want to try—even if he didn't smile back, even if he stayed cold.

Because sometimes, the quiet ones had the loudest hearts.
