Chapter 84 – The Breakup

Ryan's POV

The sky was overcast, gray clouds hanging like a curtain over Rosehill. Ryan sat on the bleachers at the park court, staring at the empty hoop. He hadn't touched a basketball all day.

Anna arrived with that familiar lightness in her step, her smile soft and honest—just like always. "You said you wanted to talk?"

He couldn't meet her eyes.

He wanted to freeze time. To hold her hand one more time. To kiss her and forget everything. But he couldn't.

He had to say it.

"Yeah," Ryan muttered, standing up. "Look, I've been thinking… and we should end this."

Her smile faltered. "What?"

"This," he said, waving a hand vaguely between them. "Us. It was fun, but… it's done."

Anna blinked, stunned. "Ryan, where is this coming from?"

"I mean, come on," he said, forcing a bitter laugh. "Did you really think this was forever?"

He felt like trash even saying the words, but he had to. If he told her the truth—that they were siblings—it would shatter her. It would destroy the beautiful world she lived in. So he took the blow himself. Played the villain.

"It wasn't real for you?" she asked, voice trembling.

He shrugged, jaw tight. "It was an experiment. That's all."

"An experiment?" Anna repeated. "You're joking, right? After everything we've—"

"I'm not joking," he said, cold now. "I wanted to see what it felt like. Being close to someone again. You were there. It was convenient."

He hated himself.

Anna's eyes welled with tears, her mouth opening as if to speak but nothing came out. Her hands shook.

"You don't mean that," she whispered. "You don't. Ryan, what's going on?"

He stared straight ahead, teeth clenched. "It's better this way."

"You're lying."

"Go home, Anna."

A beat of silence. Then she stepped back like he'd pushed her.

"I hate you," she said.

He flinched. But said nothing.

Anna turned and walked away, wiping tears from her face, and every step she took was like a knife to his chest.

Ryan sat back down.

And broke.
