Evelyn's POV
The door clicked shut behind Anna as she fled to her room, her sobs still echoing in the hallway. Evelyn stood frozen, heart torn. She had never seen her daughter so shattered.
"She said he told her it was just an experiment," Evelyn whispered, turning to Richard, who stood at the base of the stairs with his fists clenched and eyes burning.
"That's not why he did it," Richard said through gritted teeth. "He's protecting her."
Evelyn looked at him. "You really think so?"
"I know so," he replied. "Sarah told me everything. Ryan knows the truth now. That they're… that he's my son."
The weight of those words settled over them again—heavy, undeniable, painful. Evelyn ran her hand through her hair and sank into a chair.
"She doesn't know," Evelyn said. "She still doesn't know, Richard."
"And we're not telling her," he said firmly. "Not now. Not like this."
Evelyn looked up, eyes filled with emotion. "But she deserves to know."
"I know," he replied. "But right now she's broken. If she hears the full truth now—if she finds out that the boy she fell in love with is her half-brother—"
"She won't just be heartbroken," Evelyn said, finishing his thought. "She'll be ruined."
They sat in silence for a moment, both parents hurting for their children in ways they could barely express. Evelyn wiped a tear from her cheek.
"He's a good kid," she said quietly. "Ryan. He did this to protect her."
Richard nodded slowly. "I never got to be a father to him… and now, the first real thing I've seen him do is break his own heart to protect his sister."
The word still stung, even when said gently. Sister.
"She loves him, Richard."
"I know."
"And he loves her."
"I know."
Evelyn stood, walking slowly to the kitchen window, staring into the night.
"We'll have to tell her one day," she whispered. "But not now. Not while she's like this."
Richard stayed quiet for a moment, then said softly, "When she's stronger. When she can handle it."
Evelyn turned to him. "And when that day comes… we tell them everything."
Richard nodded, though his heart already ached for the pain it would bring.
For now, they would hold the truth. Not out of fear—but out of love.
