Chapter 46: Lucas was Enemy!

 Mia's blood ran cold. Lucas.

The name hit her like a punch to the gut. She had thought he was gone—just a shadow from Ethan's past that had faded into nothing. But now, everything she thought she knew was coming crashing down. Lucas had always been a mystery—someone whose presence loomed large in Ethan's life, someone who had been there when Ethan was part of the Syndicate.

"Lucas?" Mia repeated, her voice shaking. "He's the one who's been after us?"

Ethan's face twisted with guilt. "He's been after the box for years. He and I have a history—a history that goes back to the heart of the Syndicate itself. He's ruthless, Mia. He doesn't care about anything except getting control of the Syndicate. And if that means taking the box from us—if that means killing both of us to do it—he'll do it."

Mia's mind spun. "But you said... you left the Syndicate. You walked away from it. Why would Lucas come after you?"

Ethan clenched his fists, his jaw tight. "Because I didn't leave just anyone. I didn't leave the Syndicate's grip behind without making enemies. Lucas was one of them—one of the people who wanted to control everything. But I didn't play his game. I walked away, and I've been paying the price for it ever since."

Mia's stomach tightened as she tried to process what Ethan was telling her. The layers of lies, the betrayals, the secrets—it was all too much.

But then one thing became clear. Lucas wasn't just an old enemy. He was the enemy.

"If Lucas gets the box, it's over," Mia said, her voice trembling with the realization. "He'll control the Syndicate. He'll—"

"Turn it into something worse than it already is," Ethan finished for her, his face grim.

"Exactly."

They both stood there, trapped in the suffocating silence, the weight of everything finally sinking in.

"We need to destroy it," Mia said suddenly, her voice sharp with determination. "We need to get rid of the box. If it's the key to everything, if it's what Lucas and the Syndicate want... then we can't let them have it. We can't let them use it to hurt anyone else."

Ethan looked at her, his eyes searching hers. For the first time, Mia saw a glimmer of something—admiration? Hope?

He stepped forward, taking the box from her hands with a steady, deliberate motion. "You're right. The box is too dangerous. But I can't just destroy it. It's the key to something much bigger than us. If we burn it or smash it... we might destroy what's left of the Syndicate's hold on power, but we could also unleash something worse."

Mia frowned. "What do you mean? You said Lucas wants it. Doesn't that mean if we destroy it, it's over?"

Ethan hesitated. "If we destroy it, we'll never know what it's really capable of. We'll never know the full truth about why it was created."

Mia's pulse quickened. "Then what are we supposed to do?"
