A Change in Life (1)

I, Yuki, am a first-year high school student in Kyoto, Japan—And the son of a rich businessman.

It was just a normal day. I was on my way to school, like always.

The morning was quiet. Peaceful. I wasn't particularly interested in anything. Just going through the motions.

As I neared the school gate—

"YUKIIIII!!"

Something—no someone—jumped on me from behind.

"Wha—?!"

Startled, I turned around, glint of orange hair that sparkled under the morning sun,

Of course. It was her.

"Aika…" I sighed.

My childhood friend. Always cheerful. Always full of energy. Exactly the same as always.

I didn't say much. Just greeted her with a nod and kept walking. As expected, she followed me without hesitation.

"Why are you always so distant lately?" she asked, keeping pace beside me. "We used to be so close... Is it because of what I said a few weeks ago?"

"…No," I replied after a pause. "It's not that. It's just how I am."

But even as I said that the memory came flooding back.

A few weeks ago—She confessed to me. Told me she had loved me for a long time.

I… gently turned her down

.

After that, we didn't talk. For weeks. It wasn't that I was avoiding her. I just… didn't know what to say. I wanted to respect her space.

Today, though—She was the one who broke the silence.

Honestly, I was relieved. I probably would've talked to her soon… but she beat me to it.

She kept talking all the way to class, like she'd been holding it in for ages. I gave short replies. Nothing much.

But she kept smiling. Kept chatting like nothing ever happened.

Eventually, we reached the classroom. We sat down. Her other friends gathered around her, chatting like usual.

The bell rang. The teacher walked in. And just like that, the class began.
