Chapter 3

I glanced at Emily's hand and smiled softly. "Indeed, if you're hurt, you should see a doctor."

Emily's hand bore only a faint red mark, a wound so tiny it was almost invisible.

"If we'd arrived any later, I fear the wound might have already healed," I couldn't help but remark sarcastically.

Hearing my words, James became irritated. "Cora, what are you insinuating? Emily's hands are crucial for her experiments. We can't risk any mishaps."

James looked at the report in my hand, his brow furrowing as he was about to speak.

But he was interrupted by Emily's pained voice: "James..."

James quickly steadied her, shooting me a cold glare. "I'll take Emily to see a doctor. You can go home by yourself."

James spoke without waiting for my response and hurriedly left with Emily to find a doctor.

To an outsider, they might have appeared to be the couple, while I was just a stranger.

At this point, let them enjoy their happy days for a little longer.

Leaving the hospital, I returned to the home James and I shared.

Matching coffee mugs, couples' t-shirts, our first anniversary photo, graduation ceremony picture, wedding photo...These were all chosen by James and me together, carefully placed in the display cabinet after our wedding.

But now the cabinet door lock is covered in dust, and our relationship has soured.

When did things start to change?

I suppose it was after Emily returned to the country and first contacted him.

We used to conduct experiments together, commute to work together.

When we faced challenges, we encouraged each other, vowing to conquer cancer.

Later, it turned into him frequently going on business trips, attending various academic conferences with Emily.

But I believed in James!

I believed in our love!

Yet I never imagined...

That true feelings could change in an instant.

I took all these things out and threw them into the trash.

Just then, James suddenly called.

"Cora, I just took Emily for a check-up, nothing serious, but Emily wants to get back to work quickly and is planning to work overtime at the office."

"You know she's new and doesn't really understand things yet, so I'm going to keep her company while she works late. I'll be home later."

I couldn't be bothered to care. After I finished tidying everything up,

My phone received numerous photos of James and Emily. There are scenes of two people watching a movie together, riding a Ferris wheel, sitting on the same bed drinking...

"Cora, if you have any self-respect left, you'll leave James as soon as possible. He doesn't love you at all."

"See? Whenever I want, he'll drop you in a heartbeat to come to me."

Below were some more unspeakable words.

No need to guess, this was from Emily.

Although I told myself I didn't care anymore, seeing these still sent a pang through my heart.

The next morning, I woke up and didn't see James.

As expected.

I contacted a lawyer to draft divorce papers, submitted my resignation to the company, and booked a high-speed train ticket home.

Now, the only thing I'm worried about is my mother back in my hometown.
