Kyle walked down the hallway, the faint echo of his footsteps the only sound breaking the silence of the early morning.
His class was scheduled to start a bit later today, giving him time to clear his mind. But even in this brief pause, his thoughts circled relentlessly - around Milia, the experiments, and those visions had haunted him since last night.
The VNC competitions is just around the corner, but all Kyle could think is about last night - those painful vision. Mila and her pain. The horror she had to endured and what had been done to her.
He couldn't shake the image of her trapped in a lab, her body twisted with pain as the green liquid injected to her. How can Kyle shake the image away, when he also felt it? All the pain, the fear, the despair, everything is so vivid for Kyle to even forgot.
Why had he seen that vision? What was the purpose of those haunting vision of her past? Was it a kind of warning? Is there anything need to be done?
His fingers curled into fists, the ring on his finger feeling heavier than ever. If the experiments Milia had suffered were still happening to others.. to innocent people - then he couldn't stand by.
He couldn't let it happen again.
The ring was Milia's, it is a ring that he inherited from Milia. More than that, this ring was a responsibility. The frostfire , the merging of flame and ice, was a power he could not asked for as a Null before, but now, he received it.
All because of this ring.
The wind outside hitting the window, but Kyle didn't hear it. He felt trapped in his own mind, weighed down by the ghost of Milia's past, a past that he hadn't lived but was somehow now a part of.
He exhaled sharply, frustrated by the thoughts in his head. There were too many unanswered questions, too many "what ifs".
But he knew one thing for sure: if these experiments were happening to to others, he couldn't sit idly by.
As the heir to the ring, as the one who wielded the power Milia had once held, it was his duty to put an end to it.
Suddenly, a tap on his shoulder broke through the haze of his thoughts. He startled, blinking up at the familiar figure beside him.
"Yes, student Kyle?", Professor Miki asked, his voice sharp with a touch of amusement.
"Do you perhaps have anything you'd like to share with the class. You seem occupied"
Kyle blinked, realizing belatedly that class had already begun. His mind had wandered so far that he hadn't even noticed.
Mark, his deskmate, hadn't reminded him.
He shot a quick glare at Mark.
'This annoying guy..'
"No, professor", Kyle replied, forcing a smile, though his heart wasn't in it.
Professor Miki raised an eyebrow, but said nothing more, walking back to the front of the room.
"Alright, class. I'm sure you're all aware of the VNC competition coming up in a month. It will involve participants from multiple nations, but remember - everyone will compete under aliases. You won't know the identity of your opponents, or what powers they wield"
Kyle's mind drifted again, the professor's words blur in the background.
This competition was a big competition before the ENC. For Kyle, he really want to participate both in VNC and ENC.
It was a chance for him to master his power, and have a real-life experience.
Professor Miki continued speaking, outlining the selection process. Kyle's mind wandered around listening on the information from Professor Miki and the unforgettable vision he had last night.
As the professor finished speaking, the students began to murmur among themselves, forming groups and discussing about the competition.
Kyle remain seated, lost in thoughts.
"Do you want to join?"
"Who do you think going to represent our class?"
"Who do you think going to win the competition?"
"Kyle? He is at the top of class"
"Nah, I don't think so. Kyle unable to control his power yesterday"
"Yeah, seems like he is having problem with his power"
"Maybe Mark or Parkson."
Whispers filled the room, and Kyle couldn't help but overhear the discussions about his inability to control his power.
It was true. Yesterday, he'd struggled with his flame and ice abilities.
He'd even burned his hand.
But no one knew he had achieved the perfect balance between those element , thus forming frostfire.
'They are in for a surprise. Let's take the top spot.'
Hearing those whispers and discussion, Kyle couldn't help feeling determined to win - and prove that he is still at the top.
