The stars were just starting to pierce through the dusk as Shen Yueli stood at the cliff's edge, her long robe fluttering like a banner of war. Wind howled around her, but her eyes remained locked on the glowing sigil far below— a warning, pulsing in crimson.
" Trouble's brewing," she muttered.
Behind her, Di Yan stepped out of the shadows, silver hair gleaming like frost.
" A storm's coming," he said, slipping his hand into hers. " But it's not one we'll run from."
" I don't run," she smirked. " I dance with danger."
" Then I'll lead."
Before she could quip back, a thunderous boom shook the mountaintop. The sigil below erupted into light, and from it rose an ancient spirit beast— an obsidian wyvern with fire- crackled scales and eyes like molten gold.
Yueli blinked. " You've got to be kidding me."
Their daughter, now swaddled in protective runes and perched in a floating cradle ( courtesy of Di Yan's panicked spell work), let out a delighted giggle.
" Why is she clapping?!" Yueli cried.
" She probably thinks it's a show."
The wyvern let out a roar that shattered trees, and a wave of heat blasted the ridge. Yueli raised her arm, a barrier of moonlight forming with a flick of her wrist. " I don't have time for your teenage dragon tantrum," she snarled.
Di Yan stepped forward, chains of silver flame spiraling around his arms. " Let's end this quickly."
As the beast lunged, they moved in perfect sync— Yueli darted left, hurling crescent blades of light, while Di Yan soared upward, his chains wrapping around the wyvern's neck like a comet streaking through the sky. They clashed with a symphony of steel, fire, and magic, their coordination so precise it bordered on art.
" You take the wings, I'll blind it!" she shouted.
" Already on it!"
The wyvern screeched, but Yueli flipped midair and sent a bolt of concentrated lunar energy straight into its eye. The creature reeled back, disoriented— and that was all Di Yan needed.
With a guttural shout, he slammed his fists together, igniting his chains into a divine blaze. He plunged downward, crashing into the wyvern's back with enough force to crack the sky. It screamed and plummeted, crashing into the mountainside below.
Smoke and dust rose in a pillar. Silence followed.
Yueli landed with a flourish, brushing a speck of ash off her shoulder. " Well. That was unnecessarily dramatic."
Di Yan chuckled, wiping soot from his cheek. " I thought you liked dramatic."
" Not when I'm hungry."
Just then, a soft cooing sound interrupted them. Their daughter, floating in her cradle, had conjured a miniature glowing fruit and was trying to feed it to the spirit wolf pup.
" See?" Yueli grinned. " Chaos runs in the family."
They turned to leave— but a flicker of shadow caught Di Yan's eye. He whirled around, catching a dagger mid-air with his chain.
From the smoke stepped a man cloaked in twilight- blue, eyes burning with ancient malice.
" Who the hell are you?" Yueli demanded, hand flying to her dagger.
The man smiled, slow and smug. " I've come for the child."
Wrong answer.
Yueli didn't wait. She flung her blade with perfect aim, but it phased through him like mist. Di Yan tried his chain— same result.
" I am the whisper between worlds," the figure said. " You cannot harm me… yet."
Yueli rolled her eyes. " Ugh, vague threats and poetic nonsense. You're one of those."
The figure smirked. " The child belongs to the Celestial Accord. Her power must be bound before it unravels existence."
" You mean our baby?" Di Yan's voice dropped to a lethal chill. " Touch her, and you won't just unravel— you'll never have existed."
The figure raised a hand— and vanished.
The wind died. The forest stilled.
Yueli exhaled slowly, gripping Di Yan's hand. " Okay. That was creepy. We need a plan."
Di Yan looked at the glowing child, still giggling in her cradle. " She's strong.
Stronger than either of us."
Yueli sighed. " She gets that from me."
Di Yan arched a brow. " Excuse me?"
" You heard me, silver boy."
And just like that, the tension melted into something warm— familiar. They leaned into each other, foreheads touching under the starlight.
" You scared?" Yueli whispered.
Di Yan nodded. " Teriffied . But I'd burn the world down for you both."
She smiled. " You already burned a wyvern. That's a start."
Then she stood on tiptoe and kissed him— fierce and sweet, fire and moonlight tangled in one breathless moment. It was the kind of kiss that made storms stop to watch.
Above them, the stars shimmered.
Below, the earth trembled— again.
" Oh no," Yueli muttered, pulling away.
The baby had summoned a dancing fire- goat.
" Di Yan," she hissed, " why is there a fire- goat!"
He blinked. " I think… she's celebrating."
The goat bleated triumphantly and began tap- dancing across the rocks.
Yueli groaned. " I need a nap. And a sword that works on spirits. And a babysitter."
" You have me."
" You're the reason we made her."
"… Point taken."
The wind carried the scent of ozone and wildflowers as the three of them walked back toward their camp, chaos flickering at their heels like sparks waiting to ignite.
And somewhere in the distance, the echo of a prophecy stirred.
