Chapter 6

Hana was deep in her nap, her head resting on her desk, trying to block out the world. For a moment, she was at peace, lost in the comforting haze of sleep.

That was until she heard that voice, the one that made her heart sink and her stomach churn.

"Yo, Dara, I'm bored. Can I play with your sister?"

It was Kim Eunchae. The devil in human form.

Hana peeked cautiously through the crook of her arms, her view blurry but unmistakable.

There they were Dara's so-called friends, standing in the doorway, their energy radiating malice like a toxic cloud.

She caught Dara's gaze for a split second before quickly burying her face in her arms again, as if that would shield her from the nightmare about to unfold.

"Ya," Dara said with a casual shrug, her tone careless. "It's not like you ever asked me before. Hana's lonely; she could use some friends."

The betrayal stung, but it wasn't new.

Eunchae's laughter was sharp and venomous. "Dara is such a sweet angel. She cares so much about her sister, right, Haram?"

Haram, who was busy applying lipstick in her small compact mirror, tilted her head with mock consideration. "Right. I'm bored anyway. Honestly, Hana's so lucky to have a sister like Dara and friends like us."

Their laughter echoed through the classroom as they began to approach, their footsteps pounding louder in Hana's ears than they should have.

Please disappear. Please just leave me alone, she thought, wishing she could vanish, wishing she could conjure a Harry Potter-style invisibility cloak to hide from them.

A sharp poke in her side shattered her feeble hopes. She looked up reluctantly, her heart pounding, only to meet the cold, mocking eyes of Choi Soojin.

"I missed you," Soojin sneered, her tone dripping with false affection.

Eunchae's smile was blinding, her teeth so white they seemed to glow, but the malice in her expression was impossible to miss. "Let's play," she said, her voice a sickening mix of sugar and poison.

The three of them circled her like predators, their amusement growing as Hana's dread seeped into the air.
