CHAPTER 2 THE FIRST STEP

The next morning dawned clear and bright, with the sun rising in the east to cast long shadows across the landscape. Kael stood at the foot of his house, his bag packed, his heart racing with excitement. Beside him, Snivy was ready for whatever lay ahead, its leafy tail swaying in the breeze as it observed the world around them with a quiet but determined gaze.

"Are you sure about this, Snivy?" Kael asked, though he knew the answer. The small Grass-type Pokémon gave a confident nod in response, its eyes filled with trust. Kael smiled. "Alright then, let's go."

Before they could take another step, a familiar voice called out to him from behind.

"Kael! Wait up!"

Turning around, Kael saw Leo hurrying toward him, with Piplup waddling excitedly at his side. Leo's face was beaming with enthusiasm, his backpack slung carelessly over one shoulder.

"You're leaving already?" Leo asked, half out of breath from his sprint. "I thought you might stick around for a bit longer."

"I could've stayed longer," Kael said with a smirk, "but I have to start this journey now. You know how it is."

Leo gave a dramatic sigh. "Yeah, yeah. I get it. I'm just going to miss you. But I suppose I'll see you soon anyway, right?"

"Definitely," Kael said, clapping Leo on the back. "I'll be back for a rematch when I'm stronger."

Leo grinned. "You better be! I'm not losing to you anytime soon."

Kael couldn't help but laugh. Their friendly rivalry was something that had kept them motivated since they were kids, and now it would fuel their growth as trainers.

"Good luck, Kael!" Leo called after him, as he turned and waved. "Don't go getting lost out there!"

"Thanks, Leo!" Kael waved back, a sense of resolve filling him as he turned his attention forward. This was it. The real journey was beginning.

The path leading out of Pallet Town was lined with tall, swaying grass. The quiet rustling of the leaves was the only sound breaking the silence as Kael and Snivy made their way toward the forest. The air was fresh, and the world around them seemed alive, every leaf and blade of grass offering a promise of new beginnings.

As they walked, Kael couldn't help but reflect on the conversation he'd had with Cynthia the night before. It felt surreal that the Sinnoh Champion was now his mentor. He had so many questions about what would come next—how exactly would she guide him, what kinds of challenges awaited him, and how would he ever live up to her expectations?

"Snivy," Kael murmured, crouching down to eye level with his Pokémon, "we've got a long road ahead of us. But we'll make it through, right?"

Snivy's tail flicked again, and it gave a small chirp that Kael took as an affirmation. He smiled. They would make it through, together.

As they neared the edge of the forest, the quiet serenity of the world around them began to change. The rustling of the trees grew louder, and the calls of wild Pokémon echoed in the distance. Kael's heart quickened—he had entered a world full of possibilities.

"Alright, Snivy," Kael said, straightening up. "Let's take our first steps into the wild."

As they entered the forest, Kael's senses were heightened. The air was thick with the earthy smell of trees and damp ground. The shadows were deep, and the light filtered through the canopy above, casting dappled patterns on the ground. Kael felt a surge of excitement; this was the beginning of something incredible.

"Let's take it slow," Kael murmured. "We don't know what kinds of Pokémon we might encounter here."

Just as he spoke, a rustling sound came from the bushes to their right. Kael tensed, his hand instinctively going to his Pokéballs. Snivy stood alert, its body coiled in preparation for whatever challenge lay ahead.

Suddenly, a small, yellow Pokémon darted out of the bushes. It was a Pidgey, looking up at Kael with curious eyes before flapping its wings and taking flight into the air.

Kael grinned. "A Pidgey. That's a good sign."

Before he could react further, however, another rustling sound came from the bushes, but this time it was much bigger. Out of the foliage emerged a large, bipedal Pokémon—one Kael instantly recognized as a Machop. Its muscles rippled as it stood tall, its fists clenched and ready for action.

"Looks like we've got a challenge after all," Kael said, excitement bubbling up inside him. This was the first wild Pokémon he'd encountered on his journey, and he was ready to test his skills.

"Snivy, you're up!" Kael called, tossing Snivy's Pokéball into the air. The Grass-type Pokémon materialized in a flash of white light, landing gracefully on the ground.

Machop immediately squared off with Snivy, its gaze intense and focused. It seemed eager for a fight.

"Alright, Snivy, use Tackle!" Kael commanded.

Snivy darted forward with impressive speed, ramming into Machop's chest with a solid hit. The Machop staggered back, its eyes narrowing as it quickly regained its balance.

"Not bad," Kael muttered. "But we've got to do better than that. Snivy, try a Leer to lower its defense!"

Snivy's eyes glinted as it shot a fierce, intimidating glare at Machop. The Fighting-type Pokémon flinched, its posture weakening just slightly.

"Now's our chance," Kael said. "Tackle again!"

Snivy charged forward once more, this time with even more force, sending Machop stumbling backwards. The wild Machop looked winded but determined. It retaliated with a powerful Karate Chop, its fist slamming into Snivy's side.

"Snivy!" Kael called in concern. The hit had been stronger than he expected.

But Snivy quickly recovered, shaking off the blow. "Are you okay?" Kael asked softly.

Snivy gave a determined look in response, clearly ready to continue.

"Let's end this. Use Vine Whip!" Kael commanded.

Snivy's vines shot out from its body, wrapping around Machop's legs and pulling it to the ground. Machop struggled but couldn't break free. With a final, determined tug, Snivy sent the Fighting-type crashing to the forest floor, defeated.

Kael exhaled in relief. "Nice job, Snivy."

The Machop, now exhausted and clearly outmatched, slowly stood up and, with a gruff noise, walked back into the forest, disappearing into the undergrowth.

Kael stood still for a moment, taking in what had just happened. This was just the beginning, but already, he felt a deep sense of connection with Snivy. It wasn't just about winning battles—it was about working together, learning, and growing stronger as a team.

"Let's keep going," Kael said, his voice filled with renewed confidence. "There's a lot more to see out here."

As they continued their journey through the forest, Kael couldn't help but feel that, with every step, he was moving closer to the goal he had set for himself. There were bound to be challenges ahead, but with Snivy by his side, Kael felt ready for whatever the world would throw at him.

Cynthia's training had just begun, and Kael knew that with every victory, he was becoming more than just a Pokémon trainer. He was becoming someone worthy of the legacy he hoped to leave behind.
