I lay there, clothes in disarray, hair a mess, screaming desperately for help. The patrol team turned a blind eye, some even deliberately stirring up the crowd.
"Come quick, everyone! Look at the number one slut from the garrison. She seduces men, even married ones!"
"She tried to seduce Colonel Grey a few days ago and failed. Now she's been caught in the act! Hahaha!"
"Poor Colonel Grey, his lifelong reputation ruined by this homewrecker."
The crowd grew restless, voices of schadenfreude rising and falling.
Dad's Jeep pulled up. I stumbled towards the front, my forehead smashing hard against the headlight.
Blood trickled into my eyes, turning the world crimson.
"Dad, save me..."
But my usually doting father pulled out his belt and struck my shoulder hard.
"You disgraceful thing! I sent my good son to the Wilson family, and they raised you into this depraved son-in-law, corrupting military discipline."
"From this day forward, I'm cutting ties with you. I have no son!"
The belt rained down. I knelt on the ground in disarray, clutching his pant leg, begging desperately.
Dad kicked me away in disgust. The car sped off, its exhaust spraying over my blood-covered face."Look at this bastard, even his own father can't stand him anymore."
The soldiers' vulgar jeers echoed in my ears.
My eyes blurred with tears, unable to comprehend how I ended up in this situation.
Was I wrong to simply pursue love?
"Stop!"
Emily, as if gone mad, sprinted from the training grounds and shielded me, catching the stones hurled in my direction.
She gripped the agent's wrist, loudly explaining the circumstances.
"I'm deeply in love with Asher. No matter what he's done, I'm willing to forgive him."
"I'll do anything to spare him from further humiliation."
The agent shook off her hand, sneering.
"Colonel Grey, you dare plead for a traitor?"
"Aren't you afraid of going down with him?"
Emily shouted, "I've already lost his heart, I can't lose him too!"
The agent's face hardened as he grabbed his belt and lashed it across her back.
Emily let out a muffled groan, shielding me beneath her. Blood soaked through her uniform, yet she still held my hand tightly.
Numb inside, I broke free from her embrace, throwing myself face-first onto the sandy ground.
The swirling sand became my dance partner as I screamed, begging for a divorce."Emily, you and David actually make a great couple. You should let David be your new husband. May you have many children and grandchildren, and may all your wishes come true."
"As for me, I don't want to have anything to do with you anymore."
Emily hugged me tightly, her grip so strong it was as if she wanted to meld me into her very bones and blood.
"You fool, how could you think that way?"
"David and I were just acting. I love you, Asher. You're the only one I'll ever love in this lifetime."
An overwhelming sadness washed over me, and I lost consciousness again.
When I came to, I found myself in a dilapidated shipping container, dark and damp, reeking of mold.
My wounds were still seeping blood.
Emily's assistant pushed open the door, sneering.
"This place is full of war and disease. A man like you isn't worth wasting bullets or antibiotics on."
