Chapter 2

"Don't put on an act. You're as fit as a fiddle. You only gave a little blood, what's the big deal?"

She curled her lip in disdain, not giving a damn whether I lived or died.

My heart sank into despair.

Blood continued to seep from the needle mark as I silently closed my eyes.

"Sarah, let's get a divorce."

She froze for a moment, her brow furrowing.

"A divorce? Just because I asked you to save Mark, you want to divorce me?"

I nodded. That's right.

No man could accept such betrayal and humiliation.

"If I were naked in bed with someone else, could you accept that?"

Sarah clearly hadn't expected me to be so blunt. Her face turned pale, gradually becoming unsightly.

But this was the reality, clear as day to everyone.

During the rescue, I could even feel the sympathetic looks from my teammates.

"John, don't be dramatic. I just felt lonely and got a bit too close to Mark. I just let loose a little, that's all."

"The truth is, I still love you deeply."

She approached me, attempting to stand on her tiptoes to embrace me.

Upon seeing the blood-soaked bandage, she let out a soft gasp.

"How did this happen? The bleeding won't stop?"The nurse hurriedly applied medicine to my wound, looking at me with guilt. She whispered softly, "I'm so sorry. I was in such a rush earlier that I forgot about your blood clotting issues..."

This belated remorse was unwelcome.

Mark slowly regained consciousness, still murmuring her name.

She tensed up, glancing awkwardly at me.

"Mark's had it rough. I'm the only one he knows in this city. I should go check on him."

I laughed bitterly to myself. Sarah might have forgotten, but in this city, she was my only family too.

To support her career growth and market expansion, I had quit my job as department head to come here and be with her.

In the end, I lost everything - both love and livelihood.

I went to the fire station and submitted my transfer request.

"You're volunteering to go to Syria? That place is dangerous as hell! Sure, the pay is good, but you could die at any moment!"

That's right, but I don't want to stay here anymore.

And I hope the organization can give me a new identity, to disappear completely.

After finalizing everything, night had fallen. I walked into the villa's yard, staring blankly at the time capsule in the corner.

When we got married, Sarah and I left letters in it, planning to open them on our second anniversary.

The day after tomorrow would be that anniversary.I took out the divorce agreement drafted by the lawyer and stuffed it into the time capsule.

Sarah hugged me from behind, her nightgown thin and revealing, leaving little to the imagination.

"John, I knew you couldn't let me go. You're so eager to open our promise to each other."

She called the nanny and took out a ring with letters engraved inside.

SL.

My brow furrowed as I looked at her with displeasure.

Sarah sensed something was off. After seeing the engraving on the ring, her face instantly turned pale.

"These jewelers are so careless. I'll go fire them and make it up to you."

She dialed the phone in front of me and had someone bring a new ring.

It was exactly the same style as before.

Her love could be divided in two.

"John, I've prepared a surprise for you. You'll see the day after tomorrow."

I scoffed inwardly but maintained a polite smile as I caressed the ring.

"I have a surprise for you too."

She snuggled into my arms, completely oblivious to Mark's incoming call displayed on the phone.
